As the Minnesota Vikings continue to trim their roster down to 53 players, one group of players has been hit particularly hard with cuts. The 2021 draft class has seen a number of players leave the team today: especially from the group of Vikings third-round picks. Here is the full list of cuts (so far) from the Vikings 2021 draft class:

  • QB Kellen Mond
  • LB Chazz Surratt
  • IOL Wyatt Davis
  • EDGE Janarius Robinson

The first three players are from the Vikings third-round picks that has become infamous from Rick Spielman’s final draft. Most notably, Kellen Mond is off the roster after being the supposed backup plan to Kirk Cousins when he was drafted. After playing just three snaps in the 2021 regular season and disappointing in the 2022 preseason, his tenure comes to an end exactly 16 months after it began on April 30th, 2021.

Additionally, Wyatt Davis was viewed as one of the best interior offensive linemen in the entire 2021 draft when he was drafted. The Vikings have had problems at the right guard spot for years, and he was supposed to come in and be a plug-and-play type of player. It’s possible that he will land back on the Vikings practice squad, assuming he clears waivers. For a player that was considered a steal in the third-round, it would be a catastrophic fall from grace for him to fail to garner any interest from other teams.

Finally, Chazz Surratt is done after a year, but this was the most predictable after the Vikings picked up Jordan Hicks via free agency and drafted Brian Asamoah.

This leaves Patrick Jones II as the sole player remaining from the 2021 group of Vikings third-round picks, but he has certainly earned his roster spot. Ironically enough, he was seen as the biggest project coming out of the draft, having superb physical abilities but lacking technique as a pass rusher.

Entering year two of his NFL career, Jones is EDGE3 on the Vikings roster, being the first player off the bench in case either Danielle Hunter or Za’Darius Smith come out of the game. Jones has certainly earned his roster spot, but this draft class is quickly becoming a testament that we never truly know what will happen with these prospects.
