Kellen Mond Has Been Cut

Kellen Mond went into the Vikings organization with oodles of potential after being selected in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M. The plan for Mond seemed to be that he would solve the ongoing backup QB woes in Minnesota while potentially being the succession plan to Kirk Cousins down the road. Unfortunately, none of those plans will come to fruition as the Vikings have cut Kellen Mond ahead of his second year in the NFL.

Mond was taken with the 66th overall pick in the 2021 draft, but after a bout with Covid during training camp, and a preseason in which he struggled mightily, he spent much of the 2021 season as the QB3 behind Sean Mannion. He appeared in just one game during the year: the infamous Kirk Cousins COVID game against Green Bay. Mond played just three snaps of that game.
Heading into the 2022 season, the backup job seemed like it was his to lose now that he had a year of NFL experience under his belt. Mond certainly showed signs of promise, especially in the Vikings preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders. However, the same concerns about his decisiveness as a passer remained.
It became clear that the new Vikings regime was unsatisfied at the backup QB spot, and that prompted them to go out and get Nick Mullens from the Las Vegas Raiders last week. Following that move, it seems like a fair assumption that both Mond and Sean Mannion will be off the 53-man roster.
As for Mond’s future, there is a possibility that he gets claimed off of waivers. It’s undeniable that he had a large number of people believing he was a promising QB prospect going into the draft. This being just his second year in the NFL, it’s not unfathomable that he could improve to be a quality backup in the league.
