A Starter Is Out

The most shocking move of cutdown day comes at the very end. The Vikings have released DL Armon Watts; someone who has been slated as a first-team player on the defensive line. He is the only starter that played snaps in the second preseason game against the Niners, so the Vikings obviously wanted more look at him before making a decision. That said, the 26-year-old will almost assuredly be picked up elsewhere.

The First RB Cut

The Vikings running back room is the hot topic right now: will the Vikings keep five HB/FB players, or will one of CJ Ham or Alexander Mattison be off the roster this afternoon? For now, they’ve gotten the expected move out of the way by releasing Bryant Koback. The UDFA could see some interest from other teams.

The TE and WR Rooms are Set

Following their first cut of a 2022 draft pick, Zach Muse, the Vikings have released another young tight end in Zach Davidson. This means the Vikings will carry three tight ends on their 53-man roster: Irv Smith, Johnny Mundt, and Ben Ellefson.

Additionally, the Vikings seem to have settled on a group of wide receivers as well; one that is a bit smaller than initially anticipated. Minnesota has cut Dan Chisena and will only carry five receivers on the roster. That group is Justin Jefferson, Adam Thielen, KJ Osborn, Ihmir Smith-Marsette, and Jalen Nailor.

Seventh Round Tight End Nick Muse Is Out

The Vikings have cut tight end Nick Muse, trimming their tight end room down to four players. Muse had a strong preseason finale, but it was not enough to save a roster spot for the rookie. Another player that seems destined for the Vikings practice squad.

Kris Boyd Appears to Win the CB6 Job

Both Nate Hairston and Parry Nickerson have been released by the Vikings, and because of that, it appears that Kris Boyd has won the CB6 job in Minnesota.

Wyatt Davis is the Latest 2021 Draft Prospect to Be Cut

The Vikings have released guard Wyatt Davis. Davis did not play a singled offensive snap in 2021 after being picked in the third round.

No QB3 for the Vikings

The Vikings will not roster a third QB on their roster after they have released Sean Mannion. Kellen Mond was also waived earlier this morning.

Vikings Release Rookie Pass Rusher

Zach McCloud hit waivers on Tuesday morning after being released by the Vikings. In a deep EDGE room, this move was expected, but look for him to be another practice squad candidate.

Another 2021 Third-Rounder Hits Waivers

The Vikings have cut another player among the third round of the 2021 draft class. LB Chazz Surratt hits waivers after finding himself in a battle against Brian Asamoah and Troy Dye this year.

More Trimming in the WR Room

The group of wide receivers that will make the Vikings final 53-man roster is beginning to take shape now that Trishton Jackson has been cut. Jackson had a strong preseason, but a few bad drops ultimately cost him a roster spot. Expect him to land on the practice squad if he goes unclaimed.

The Kellen Mond Era Comes to an End

After being drafted with the 66th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Kellen Mond’s tenure with the Minnesota Vikings has come to an abrupt end after failing to impress during training camp. If unclaimed, he could be a practice squad candidate.

Janarius Robinson, Josh Sokol Hit Waivers

The Minnesota Vikings drafted Janarius Robinson off of his physical upside in 2021, but unfortunately injuries derailed his young career. After a training camp in which he did not impress enough, the Vikings have waived the second-year EDGE rusher.

Additionally, the Vikings have cut third-string center Josh Sokol. Both Chris Reed and Austin Schlottmann outperformed him in this battle to be the backup behind Garrett Bradbury.

Timon Parris Is Cut, Bisi Johnson and T.Y. McGill Head to IR

The Vikings have made a move to trim down their offensive line by cutting Timon Parris. Parris had his struggles in the preseason finale, especially in pass protection. Then on the injury front, it had been reported this morning that the Vikings released T.Y. McGill, but it seems that the team has placed him on IR along with Bisi Johnson. This ends both players’ seasons after a promising camp and preseason.

Vikings Cut a Preseason Star

The Minnesota Vikings have officially parted ways with T.Y. McGill on Monday morning after an ankle sprain took him out of the preseason finale in Denver, per Ian Rapoport.

McGill, an NFL journeyman, recorded 3.5 sacks during the first two preseason games, so keep an eye on him as a potential player to return to the Vikings once his ankle heals if he does not end up claimed off of waivers.

Myron Mitchell Is the Latest WR Cut

The wide receiver room has seen a number of cuts in recent weeks, with Albert Wilson being a surprise release last week while Bisi Johnson’s ACL tear means he will miss the entirety of the 2022 season. Johnson’s injury opened the door for another receiver to remain on the roster, but it looks like Myron Mitchell will not be that guy. The Vikings cut Mitchell on Monday morning. Should Mitchell clear waivers, he seems bound for the practice squad. This latest news among the Minnesota Vikings roster cuts will trim the team down to 77 players.

Tye Smith Has Been Cut–Again

This cut was an expected one considering it’s been done once already. The Vikings cut Tye Smith two weeks ago, but they brought him back prior to the Broncos game because they needed depth at the cornerback position. Smith should clear waivers again and could be a candidate for the practice squad.
