Storylines to Follow As Vikings Mandatory Mini Camp Nears
The Vikings’ mandatory mini camp takes place from Tuesday, June 7 until Wednesday, June 8. Much of the chatter coming out of OTAs has been positive. We’re getting some clues about the offensive line, Kellen Mond is generating some positive reports, and we’re all keeping an eye on things at corner.
Mini camp was supposed to be three days, but Kevin O’Connell obviously feels happy with what was accomplished during OTAs.
Mandatory mini camp is the next step in the offseason program. There are plenty of storylines we ought to be following this week (Dustin highlights a few at Vikings Territory):
- The iOL competition between Wyatt Davis, Chris Reed, Jesse Davis, Ezra Cleveland, and Ed Ingram.
- What kind of defensive back groups do we see? Are there lots of 3-safety looks?
- Are any of the rookies standing out? Fans will be particularly interested in Lewis Cine and Andrew Booth Jr.
- The battle for the OLB3 role will be an important one to keep an eye on.
- Will there be any separation in the special teams competition? Both the veteran Greg Joseph and Jordan Berry will need to earn their spots.
- Perhaps most intriguing of all: what do the new schemes look like?
As you can see, there’s all kinds of intrigue leading into the Vikings’ mandatory mini camp.
In many ways, the most important parts of the offseason are still ahead. Most of the talent acquisition has taken place (though some notable free agents remain). The focus now rests on turning a group of 90 Vikings into the most dangerous group of 53 possible.
It’s impossible to win the Super Bowl during the offseason. However, it certainly is possible to lose it. If a team doesn’t commit to doing things the right way, it can undermine a season before it begins. The NFL is remarkably competitive, so even these early days are important. The Vikings, in other words, ought to be taking their mandatory mini camp very seriously. Being able to start laying a strong foundation will hopefully pay off during the season itself.
