The roster, as it stands, sits at a full 90 players. Even still, life moves pretty fast, as Ferris Bueller says. Players regularly get shuffled around this time of the year. My point, folks, is that some of the free agents rumored to the Vikings may still find themselves in a purple uniform.

Over at Spotrac, there’s a helpful filter that allows one to see NFL free agents.

The main name for a lot of Vikings fans will be J.C. Tretter, the former center for the Packers and Browns. Though older, he’s still among the league’s better centers. He’d be a clear upgrade over Garrett Bradbury, thereby allowing Mr. Cousins to feel a touch more secure in the pocket.

I’ve also found myself advocating for more pass rush depth at various stages. Jason Pierre-Paul is toward the top of the Spotrac list, and so is Carl Nassib. Carlos Dunlap – the former Seahawk – was reasonably productive last season: 8.5 sacks and 14 QB hits. Along the iDL, some names to remember are Akiem Hicks, Brandon Williams, Ndamukong Suh, and Larry Ogunjobi.

Julio Jones is on the list, and he’s one of the free agents who hasn’t been in the Vikings chatter quite as much. The veteran definitely isn’t as good as we was five years ago, and yet one wonders if he could do well in the right role. Minnesota is somewhat top-heavy at WR, so perhaps they’d welcome an accomplished vet to bolster the depth.

Regardless of where things go from here, it’s certainly notable that the Vikings have several options among the remaining free agents.

The roster, though mostly in place, isn’t a fixed object. Instead, it’s constantly evolving. Strengths emerge that we didn’t foresee; unforeseen weaknesses arrive. Keeping an eye on the free agents and overall budget is thus a necessary part of leading a team.

By the time Week 1 arrives, I expect the Vikings to have added at least one or two more veterans to further reinforce the roster.
