QB-Needy Teams Drafting Below The Vikings

With the Super Bowl in the rear view mirror and the new HC officially in place, the Vikings are moving ahead with their offseason. Many are likely hoping the team will be drafting a corner, o-lineman, or edge rusher, but there’s a good possibility the Vikings trade down.

PFT includes a list of the complete draft order. It’d be safe to say that the Saints (#18), Steelers (#20), Buccaneers (#27), and Lions (#32) all have some uncertainty at QB. Depending on how things shake out, the Raiders (#22), Cardinals (#23), and Titans (#26) may all be looking to choose their next QB.

As a result, the Vikings may find themselves in a desirable spot. Trading out of the first round, unless it involves some sort of humongous return for future years, seems like a misguided decision. Trading back, though, is still something that ought to be desirable for a team with several holes.

Previously, I’ve spent a bit of time discussing the possibility of a trade back. When a team is in love with a QB, they’ll often be willing to move all kinds of picks to make the deal work. That can mean an extra first and several more picks in the mid-to-late rounds.

The best thing that could happen for the Vikings, in many ways, is for absolute craziness to take place in the top 10. A team or two may fall in love with a player who most teams rank considerably lower, thereby pushing more highly-regarded players down the board. If one of the higher-end QBs makes it to 12, Minnesota could end up being in a nice position. All it takes is two teams to really love a player to start a bidding war.

I’ll admit that the Vikings drafting a stud edge rusher is what I’m most looking to see. If they can do that later in the first, though, then it’s fine by me. Get that pass rush help and add more draft capital. That situation would be reason for some Kwesi applause.
