A Couple Thoughts on The Dalvin Tomlinson And Patrick Peterson Debut

Sunday’s overtime loss to the Bengals was disappointing – to say the least. 99% of Vikings fans were expecting a win, and by a considerable margin. However, the team shot themselves in the foot too many times. It’s hard to win when you commit 10 penalties in the first half alone. We already had an extensive coverage of the game here on Purple PTSD and Vikings Territory, so the focus will be on Dalvin Tomlinson’s and Patrick Peterson’s debut.

The duo formed our most notable free-agency additions back in March, and Sunday’s game was Peterson’s first in purple and gold (Tomlinson played two preseason games). For the most part, it was another DT who stole the spotlight: Michael Pierce. It’s totally understandable though, as Pierce had a great game and matched his personal best with 2.0 sacks.

We can’t say the same for Tomlinson’s first game. After the punishment I gave myself of re-watching the game, Tomlinson further disappointed me. He could make his presence felt against neither run nor pass and Xavier Su’a-Filo had his number all day long.

Peterson’s first game with the Vikings might be getting overlooked. It wasn’t splashy, but it was highly efficient. Our CB1 did a great job covering, staying at the WR’s hips the entire time. PFF said he gave up 3 catches for 30 yards, but actually it was only one reception for three yards. Next week he will have a tough task, having to guard one of the game’s best in DeAndre Hopkins. It will be his first game in Arizona, leaving after 10 Hall of Fame-worthy seasons.

Side note I want to add so I can get it off my chest: I almost broke my fist after Cook’s fumble (he was down and Jefferson was in, clearly). Our return unit didn’t have many opportunities, but the special teams may have been the best unit on Sunday. I was really impressed with Jordan Berry’s improvement throughout the game and the last-second field goal made me so anxious that I almost threw up.
