Apparently, An NFC Team Was Supposed to Draft Lewis Cine Before The Vikings

If you trust Lewis Cine – and I’m not sure why we wouldn’t – then he was supposed to be taken with the 27th selection. He suggests that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers assured him that if he was available, he’d be Tom Brady’s newest teammate.

Pro Football Talk provides a bit more of his discussion:

“I had a team at twenty-seven,” Cine said. “They know who they are. I aint gonna’ say no names. It was at twenty-seven. The whole process — if you’re there — we’re gonna pick you. They move down to the first pick of the second round. I’m like, damn, they did me just so dirty.”

Now, Vikings fans ought not be upset about this. Tampa’s loss is Minnesota’s gain. Lewis Cine partners with Harrison Smith and Camryn Bynum to form a really strong safety trio. The secondary as a whole will benefit.

From Cine’s perspective, though, I can see how he might be a little perturbed.

The pre-draft process, I imagine, is a stressful one. All kinds of teams heap on both praise and criticism. A prospect’s name is commonly in the headlines as various prognosticators pick apart what he can and can’t do. There must be some sense of relief/hope when Tampa Bay shows up on the screen. When they decided to trade back, then I imagine things were even more stressful.

Of course, I’m merely speculating. What we do know is that Lewis Cine believes Tampa Bay made a promise to take him 27th and that didn’t happen. He’ll now be patrolling the defensive backfield in a purple uniform.
