The Minnesota Vikings’ offseason moves clearly communicate their belief that the window for contention remains open in 2026.

With veteran quarterback Kyler Murray joining, Aaron Jones returning on a team-friendly deal, and T.J. Hockenson’s restructured contract, the Vikings’ front office shows commitment to maintaining a playoff-caliber roster in 2026.

But as the Vikings attempt to strengthen the offense, a critical decision looms on defense. It is one that could reveal just how serious the organization is about making a run this season.

The Jonathan Greenard Decision

Jonathan Greenard has been a subject of trade talk over the past few weeks, but reports say he wants a new deal that pays him more, with still two years remaining and a current cap hit of $22.1 million for 2026. This has not only created an issue for the Vikings in keeping him in Minnesota, but also in finding a trade partner willing to take him on and give him a new contract.

The Vikings will have to make a decision soon rather than later. Do they:

  • Try to negotiate a new contract, keeping him on the roster.
  • Trade Greenard to gain draft capital and create more salary cap space
  • Explore trading Greenard for another impact player

The situation is complicated even more by Greenard’s 2025 season. Injuries limited him to 12 games, and his production dipped, finishing with just three sacks. For a player looking for a raise, the injury and the sack number just don’t justify a raise.

Jonathan Greenard was, however, ranked 7th in the NFL with a pressure rate of 13.5%. The issue we saw during games was that he just couldn’t finish on multiple opportunities under pressure. Greenard is still an excellent pass rusher and valuable at the prime age of 28.

Though Dallas Turner would just slide into his role, the depth would certainly be tested.

A Pass Rush Depth Without Greenard

Minnesota’s pass rush rotation would be without Greenard. Behind Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner, the Vikings would be left with unproven talent like Chaz Chambliss and Tyler Batty. Bo Richter could step up as well, but it would surely take a step back from the current rotation.

If Greenard were traded, Minnesota would be taking a risky bet that they could still generate the same amount of pressure and have to hope Andrew Van Ginkel, who missed a lot of time last year with injuries, will be available for the majority of 2026.

That pressure off the edge is huge in assisting the secondary, which still has questions on whether Harrison Smith will return to “run it back.” If he isn’t back, the safety position will have depth issues without him. The Vikings will also still need to figure out replacements at Defensive Tackle with the departures of Javon Hargrave and Jonathan Allen. That could come with individuals currently on the roster, such as Levi Drake Rodriguez, Elijah Williams, and Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins.

Kyler Murray Signals Win-Now Intent

The addition of Kyler Murray may be the clearest sign yet that Minnesota believes its competitive window is open. Kyler Murray does have a no-tag clause that prevents the Vikings from using the franchise tag on him. That means he plans to ball out this year for a big contract in 2027.

The former Pro Bowl quarterback brings dynamic mobility and explosive playmaking ability to an offense that struggled to put points on the board. J.J. McCarthy is likely to sit for a year after an inconsistent year that showed he wasn’t quite ready yet. The sophomore finished the year with 11 TDs and 12 INTs.

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray (1) warms up before playing against the Seattle Seahawks at State Farm Stadium in Glendale on Jan. 7, 2024.

Murray is an immediate upgrade in terms of the offense’s ability to put points on the board. His ability to extend plays, stress defenses with his legs, and extend drives significantly elevates Minnesota’s offensive ceiling.

Pairing Murray with playmakers like Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, and Aaron Jones gives the Vikings a versatile offensive core capable of producing big plays. Bringing back Hockenson and Jones on one-year deals signals that Kevin O’Connell, who many believe is on the hot seat going into this year, also thinks he can or needs to win.

Aaron Jones’ one-year, $5.5 million deal, and Hockenson taking a pay cut in particular reflect a “win-now” philosophy with his short-term deal, and at an attractive price, I might add. Keeping Greenard would stamp the “run it back” theme indefinitely after the initial trade rumors.

With improved offensive line health and Kyler Murray at quarterback, the Vikings believe they have upgraded the most important position. If Greenard stays, it is likely another top-10 defense to go with the improvement at quarterback.

A Defining Moment for the Vikings’ Offseason

The Vikings have fresh new energy after yesterday’s addition of Kyler Murray, and hope among fans. Players have not yet shown much on social media or to the media, but they have to be encouraged by an improved quarterback room and by keeping their core players from last year back in purple.

If Kyler Murray performs in 2026, and after how the release of Sam Darnold backfired with him winning a Super Bowl with Seattle, there is no way the Vikings do it again if Murray finds success in Minnesota.

Ultimately, Minnesota’s front office must weigh whether they are better off with Greenard on the squad or with additional cap space and draft capital.
