Javon Hargrave Is Joining the Rivals

Exactly one year ago, the Minnesota Vikings signed two-time Pro Bowler Javon Hargrave to bolster their defensive line. But the marriage lasted only one year as the franchise and defender were headed towards a divorce this offseason.
A move that had been expected for weeks, the Vikings completed his release on Wednesday. It took Hargrave only one hour to find his new employer, as he’s now joining the other part of the border battle, becoming the newest member of the Green Bay Packers.
Adam Schefter confirmed on social media, “From Minnesota to Green Bay: Former Vikings DT Javon Hargrave reached agreement today on a 2-year deal for $23 million, including $13 million this year with the Packers, per Drew Rosenhaus.”

His time with the Vikings will not go down in franchise history, as he was rather inefficient in Brian Flores’ defense. He just turned 33, and the Packers bet on him returning to his past dominance.
Hargrave appeared in 16 games, but was fairly unproductive with 3.5 sacks and 52 tackles (four tackles for loss). His 31 QB pressures ranked sixth in Brian Flores‘ defense, behind linebackers Dallas Turner, Jonathan Greenard and Eric Wilson, as well as fellow interior defenders Allen and Jalen Redmond. It’s not unfair to claim he didn’t live up to his $15 million/year salary.
The interior defender, however, logged more than 60 pressures in each year from 2021 to 2023. In 2024, an injury limited him to only three games and the 49ers moved on after the season.
Green Bay had been looking for pressure-getters next to Micah Parsons, struggling to find someone to take advantage of his frequent double-teams.

ESPN’s Packers writer Rob Demovsky wrote, “The Packers found some much-needed help up front for new defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon on Wednesday when they agreed to terms with former Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Javon Hargrave. The Packers already were thin on the defensive line even before they traded defensive tackle Colby Wooden to the Indianapolis Colts for linebacker Zaire Franklin earlier this week.”
Green Bay has undergone several moves on the defensive side of the ball this offseason, parting ways with last year’s cornerback signing, Nate Hobbs. Former top pick Quay Walker signed with the Las Vegas Raiders. Also new is the defensive coordinator. Ex-Vikings assistant Jonathan Gannon was hired to be the new defensive skipper, replacing new Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley.
Gannon and Hargrave share some history. Demovsky explained, “In Hargrave, Gannon gets a player he’s familiar with. Gannon, the former Arizona Cardinals head coach, was the Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator for two of Hargrave’s three seasons with the Eagles. In those two years (2021-22), Hargrave combined for 18.5 sacks and 104 tackles.”
The Vikings, meanwhile, are currently short-staffed on the defensive line. Jonathan Allen and Hargrave played massive snaps last year. Jalen Redmond will be one starter; the other jobs in the rotation remain a mystery.

Draft picks from the last two years, Levi Drake Rodriguez and Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins, could snag a promotion, but the Vikings could and perhaps should be in the market for some reinforcements in the draft or in free agency.
Losing Hargrave may not dramatically alter Minnesota’s defensive blueprint, but it removes an experienced rotational piece from a unit already facing depth questions. Replacing his snaps will likely require a combination of internal development and external additions before training camp.
Meanwhile, his quick landing in Green Bay adds an extra layer of intrigue to the NFC North rivalry, where familiar faces often become unexpected obstacles once the regular season begins. The Vikings will meet Hargrave twice in 2026.
