On Friday, almost a full month after the last game of the 2025 regular season, the Minnesota Vikings made the stunning decision to part ways with general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. The executive had been in charge of the franchise since the 2022 offseason.

First, Tom Pelissero reported the move via social media, followed by all the other heavy-hitters in the business. Then, the Vikings actually confirmed the decision.

The franchise released a statement:

The Minnesota Vikings announced today General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has been relieved of his duties:

Following our annual end-of-season organizational meetings over the last several weeks and after careful consideration, we have decided it is in the best interest of the team to move forward with new leadership of our football operations. These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for Kwesi’s contributions and commitment to the organization over the past four years and wish him and his family the best in the future.

Effective immediately, Executive Vice President of Football Operations Rob Brzezinski will lead our operations through the 2026 NFL Draft. Rob brings tremendous credibility and experience, understands our roster and has the ability to build consensus and rely on the expertise of our personnel and coaches. After the draft, we intend to conduct a thorough search to identify our next general manager. Building a team that can contend for championships drives us every day, and we look forward to bringing our fans the success they so deserve. – Mark & Zygi Wilf

It’s truly a stunner, especially the timing. Weeks after the disappointing season ended, the operation seemed to be heading into normal offseason mode. Just this week, Adofo-Mensah was present in Mobile, AL, attending the Senior Bowl.

Rob Brzezinski will lead the franchise through the draft. He’s been in the building since 1999, mostly known for being the guy that’s dealing with the salary cap.

ESPN’s Kevin Seifert commented, “Throughout the season, there was talk about an underlying ‘tension’ in the Vikings’ building in league circles, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. One league source told Schefter it had been ‘ugly’ in Minnesota. The timing was unusual, as Adofo-Mensah had given a postseason news conference on Jan. 13 and had spent this week in Mobile, Alabama, scouting Senior Bowl practices. He is seven months removed from signing what the Vikings called a multiyear contract extension. The team had no immediate comment.”

Adofo-Mensah has mostly drawn criticism for his draft results. The 2022 draft continues to loom over his tenure. During his tenure, the Vikings have only selected Jordan Addison and Will Reichard, who can be labeled “hit,” though it should be noted that Donovan Jackson and Dallas Turner have shown promise. Still, outside of the first round, there have been very minimal contributions over the years. His decisions to trade away several draft choices haven’t helped find new young players.

Also, despite the struggles in the draft, Adofo-Mensah has overseen a club with a 43-25 record since taking over. He has landed some elite talent in free agency.

What remains unclear is why this decision happened now. The Vikings have not offered specifics beyond broad organizational language, and Adofo-Mensah had been operating as if he were firmly in place, from his postseason press conference to his presence at the Senior Bowl. If there were long-standing concerns, the timing suggests they either escalated recently or reached a breaking point behind the scenes.

In situations like this, details tend to slowly surface over time. Reports will likely emerge in the coming days or weeks that provide more clarity on what ultimately led to the decision, whether it stemmed from philosophical disagreements, internal power dynamics, or frustration with the roster-building process.

One obvious inflection point was last offseason’s quarterback decision, when the Vikings moved on from Sam Darnold in favor of turning the offense over to J.J. McCarthy. If ownership lost confidence in that direction, it may have factored into the final call.

For now, the move leaves more questions than answers. The Vikings clearly believed a change was necessary, but until more information comes to light, the reasoning behind both the timing and the urgency remains largely unknown — and that uncertainty may be the most telling part of all.
