Vikings QB Could Be on the Outs

All of the Vikings QB talk is revolving around Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy for obvious reasons. People even bring up Carson Wentz sometimes.
Meanwhile, there is technically another QB currently on the roster than even played a couple of games last season. That man is Max Brosmer, a 2025 UDFA of the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Brosmer got a couple starts in 2025, with the first one being the infamous whooping by the hands of the eventual Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks. If you try to come up with a list of NFL games that had worse QB play, you wouldn’t put too many above that one for the Vikings.
Brosmer also started and won the Minnesota’s Christmas Day game against the Detroit Lions. It was an absolutely sweet victory where Max Brosmer did basically nothing on the group project but the gang still got an A+. That win saw the Lions get officially eliminated from the playoffs, and the Twin Cities went ahead and continued to celebrate their holiday while the City of Detroit went to bed early. It would’ve been convenient for them if the game was on Christmas Eve so they could be up early on Christmas Day after Santa came.
Unfortunately for Detroit, either way, Max Brosmer and the Vikings brought some coal.
Vikings QB Max Brosmer May Be Out of Minnesota Soon

Kyler Murray, J.J. McCarthy, Carson Wentz. That’s the trio of QBs that will likely make the 53-man roster for the Vikings in 2026. That leaves Max Brosmer on the practice squad, and that’s a maybe.
It feels like there’s not a ton of reason to keep Brosmer anyway, but the Vikings did something peculiar earlier this offseason. During rookie minicamp, the Vikings brought in QB Cooper Rush on a tryout basis. Rush ran drills since Minnesota didn’t draft or sign any rookie QBs, so Minnesota got in contact with Rush to get some work in.
This workout may not mean a lot, as it could just be a means of having rapport with Rush in case the Vikings need to make an emergency maneuver at the QB position this season. That sounds far fetched, but the Vikings have pretty much needed an emergency QB in two of Kevin O’Connell’s four seasons so far in Minnesota.
Vikings QB Trio Seems Set Going Into 2026

The Vikings have a mostly-stable QB trio heading into 2026. Sure, the starting job is up for grabs right now. However, they boast one of the best QB rooms in the entire NFL.
Whomever loses the QB competition, they are likely immediately the best backup QB in the league. With Carson Wentz likely to be QB3, that depth isn’t to shabby either. There likely just will not be a spot for Max Brosmer on the Vikings’ 53-man roster, so if he is to be with the team in 2026, it will likely be on the practice squad.
If 2026 is anything like 2025 or even 2023, then Brosmer will, at the very least, come close to more legitimate playing time. In this scenario, the Vikings would likely call upon Cooper Rush to remedy the stricken QB room.
Here’s to hoping that Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy can stay healthy, because if we have more QB injuries in Minnesota, then we’re looking at another middling year of football in the Twin Cities.
