Give Rob Brzezinski Credit

The NFL can be a difficult place. Whenever possible, top decision makers ought to keep things simple as a response to the built-in complexity.

Rob Brzezinski hasn’t been perfect. Nobody is up to the task of perfection. Where he deserves praise, though, is in hitting his layups, scoring points that are easy to score. Nailing the easy things better equips the Vikings as it relates to the complex things.

Rob Brzezinski is Hitting His Layups

Going into March, the Vikings needed to raise the ceiling and the floor at quarterback. They appear to have done so.

Bringing Kyler Murray to town for a single-season deal sitting at $1.3 million is the definition of hitting a layup. The talented veteran is the heavy favorite to be the starter in Week 1, the passer being tasked with raising the ceiling.

Solidifying the floor is the re-addition of Carson Wentz. Again, think cost and team fit. He’ll demand essentially zero maintenance and won’t chew up valuable reps that J.J. McCarthy needs. He’s huge, experienced, a Super Bowl winner, familiar with the scheme, and cheap.

Similarly laudable are the additions of CB James Pierre and P Johnny Hekker.

Ideally, each would be journeying to the Twin Cities with more youth in tow. But, in fairness, the advanced age has been factored into the price.

Last year, Pierre earned a sizzling PFF grade sitting at 86.2. He did so while shutting down the skies for Pittsburgh. Can he perform an encore now that he’s an air traffic controller for the Vikings? Sending over $8.5 million across two seasons is worth the gamble, especially with the built-in escape hatch.

Hekker offers much to like as a punter who has seen it all. He’s unusually tall at 6’5″ and has a history of excellence. Even more exciting is that he has pulled off plenty of trick plays, going 15/26 (57.7%) for his passes in his career, resulting in 193 passing yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception.

Rob Brzezinski offered up his boldest move when handing over more than $20 million to keep Eric Wilson for these next three seasons. Moreover, the add involving Buffalo’s RFA Ryan Van Demark — coming in at $4.2 million — is noteworthy.

What needs to be remembered within all of this discussion, though, is the front office’s commitment to working through the offseason with quiet competence, patience rather than panic.

For a touch beyond $4 million on the cap, a pair of passers got added. A CB3 got brought in alongside a new starter to punt. The OT3 spot has been solidified, which has been a sneaky important position over these past seasons due to the Christian Darrisaw injury turmoil.

Brzezinski still has a lot of work in front of him. In particular, there are the nine selections sitting in his back pocket as the 2026 NFL Draft appears on the horizon. What’s encouraging for Minnesota is the lack of urgent, crucial needs. Some weaker spots — center, defensive tackle, the secondary, and so on — but nothing that creates panic.

Add it all up and Rob Brzezinski has done a nice job of threading the needle. These Vikings aren’t perfect, but the expectation is the playoffs due to the moves that the front office has made.

How far the team goes will come down to the players, coaches, and likely a little luck.
