By Golly, The Vikings’ Front Office May Have Stuck the Landing

The prognosis was grim coming into March. There was very little chance that the Vikings’ front office would be able to get a compensatory pick. No longer, at least per the current best guess.

Minnesota is currently on the board to earn a compensatory pick. Nick Korte, the comp picks wizard at Over the Cap, has the Vikings earning a 6th in the 2027 NFL Draft. Not a reason to throw a parade, but icing on the cake for a team that’s desperate for young, cost-controlled talent to get added into the mix.

The Vikings’ Front Office & The Possible Comp Pick

Prior to free agency, Korte assessed the landscape. He did so accurately while discussing Minnesota’s dearth of veteran talent.

Check out his take: “The Vikings do not have many notable pending UFAs at all. Jalen Nailor might be it. With lots of roster churning going on amid a possible questionable quarterback situation, we might see that churning continue into unrestricted free agency. Potential: Very Low.”

Mr. Nailor has proven to be a very good player, someone who was a steal since he was chosen in the 6th back in 2022.

Las Vegas is moving forward with a full rebuild. Most stunning of all was the Maxx Crosby trade that seemed to get across the finish line before falling apart before becoming real. What has been done is to sign Nailor, someone who put pen to paper for the promise of a three-year deal for a touch beyond $35 million.

Not too shabby, right?

The Vikings, meanwhile, have landed QB Kyler Murray, P Johnny Hekker, and CB James Pierre so far in free agency. Only the final name — Mr. Pierre — belongs to someone who factors into the comp picks. He secured a contract sitting at a couple of seasons and $8.5 million, enough to offset the potential comp pick from seeing punter Ryan Wright journey to New Orleans.

Due to cost and/or being cut, neither of Murray or Hekker are going to offset the projected pick for Jalen Nailor.

Otherwise, the most notable move has involved sending a contract in the direction of RFA OT Ryan Van Demark. To my understanding, the large lad — were he to become a Vikings employee — won’t nullify the possible Nailor pick.

The other Vikings decisions have involved retaining or jettisoning talent. Most recent has been the decision to bring Carson Wentz back onto the mix.

Unlike previous seasons, the Vikings’ front office is elevating the draft as the lifeblood of roster building. Cheap, young, upside talent is the name of the game. Obviously, demolishing the draft is easier said than done, but Minnesota has nevertheless signalled a pivot in priorities, as evidenced by the hesitance to send out meaty money deals.

Right now, the Vikings’ mock madness is growing madder. Look for more and more speculation about how the future is going to unfold. The franchise has four picks arriving before the end of the 3rd, a reality aided by securing a compensatory selection for Sam Darnold taking off.

While considering the mock prophecies and speculations, the Vikings’ possible comp pick lingers in the background of next year’s draft.
