Vikings’ Initial Depth Chart Has a QB Caveat

Keep in mind that the Vikings’ initial depth chart isn’t the final word. In fact, the team website is sure to remind us that it’s unofficial.
Nevertheless, the first thing that almost everyone would have checked is the quarterback spot. Sam Darnold, predictably, was sitting in the top spot. What was a bit more surprising was how things look after Darnold at QB1. Apparently, it’s a toss up between J.J. McCarthy and Nick Mullens.
Vikings’ Initial Depth Chart Has a QB Caveat
Consider the official wording for who is the backup: “J.J. McCarthy OR Nick Mullens.” Note: the capital letters are in the original text.
The implication is that Kevin O’Connell’s praise for Nick Mullens isn’t insincere. Genuinely, the head coach is a believer in what Mullens can offer the team.
Consider some of what O’Connell had to say of the veteran journeyman recently: “And I do want to highlight Nick Mullens’ ability while getting maybe less reps than he has previously. You guys have seen him step in almost cold and go out and throw a ball over the middle for a big gain. Or get us into the right play; he’s already demonstrated his ownership of our system, as well.”

The words from O’Connell echo previous praise for Mullens.
Signed to a single-season deal that’s kicking over $10 million, Sam Darnold’s task involves safeguarding the No. 10 pick. The veteran is being entrusted with keeping Minnesota competitive while also ensuring McCarthy doesn’t get rushed into action.
Some believe that Darnold will resurrect his career. The basic reasoning is that O’Connell is a good coach with a cluster of skill players that’s second to none. Darnold isn’t lacking for talent and will be operating from behind an above average offensive line. Add it all together and maybe Darnold emulates someone like Geno Smith.

Another implication is that Minnesota does seem genuine in its desire to bring McCarthy along slowly.
If, for instance, McCarthy would be best served to be the QB3 for a time, then maybe that’s the path Minnesota pursues. Allow Mullens to handle the gruelling regular season if McCarthy isn’t ready.
Or, perhaps, the side-by-side placement is all about letting the young guy build momentum. He has already surpassed Jaren Hall. He can possibly surpass Mullens before too long, continuing on an upward ascent. Keeping on an upward trajectory is one way of building confidence.

The Vikings’ first preseason game takes place on Saturday, August 10th. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT and the game is against the Raiders. One of the most fascinating parts of that game will rest in how the QB reps get divvied up.
