Purple Headlines of the Week: The Stefon Diggs Trade, Vikings OC Suspended, a Big Pay Day for a Vikings Player
The 2024 NFL Draft is less than three weeks away.
As the event continues to approach, the NFL is continuing to make final roster adjustments before they add young depth to their teams. Here is a look at this week’s purple headlines that may have been missed.
Stefon Diggs Heads to Houston
Stefon Diggs was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2015 NFL Draft and spent five seasons in Minnesota before he was shipped off to the Buffalo Bills prior to the 2020 NFL Draft. Now, Diggs is on the move again as the Bills have traded him to the Houston Texans, joining Danielle Hunter.
In order to acquire Diggs, the Texans used a 2025 second-round pick that belonged to the Vikings a few weeks ago in order to acquire Minnesota’s former star receiver. Fans will remember that Minnesota opted to trade that pick to Houston as part of a package to acquire the No. 23 overall pick, thus putting them in strong position to trade up for a top quarterback prospect.
Of course, the last time a team moved on from Diggs, it was the Vikings who ultimately landed Justin Jefferson to immediately replace him. Buffalo will be hoping for something similar to solidify a shaky WR room.
Vikings OC Suspended for Three Weeks
Back in December, Vikings OC Wes Phillips was arrested for a misdemeanor DWI.
At the time, little was made of the arrest, and Phillips was allowed to travel with the team for their Week 14 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. However, it appears that the consequences of the arrest have officially come for the offensive coordinator, and he is facing a three-week suspension without pay prior to the draft.
As a result, Phillips will not be with the Vikings as they make their final preparations for this spring’s draft, but he will re-join the team three days before the event officially begins on April 25th.
Camryn Bynum Gets a Big Pay Day
Inevitably, there are players in the NFL who far outperform the amount of money that they are paid on an annual basis.
One way that the league tries to rectify that is through a performance-based amount of pay handed out to players annually. There was one Viking who was amongst the league leaders in that category during the 2023 season: safety Camryn Bynum.
Bynum, who quietly ended up being one of the better free safeties in the entire NFL last season, earned a total of $785,489 in performance-based salary this past year, which nearly equaled the $940,000 in total cash he was set to be paid by the Vikings. Bynum placed 15th on the list.
