There Is Some Good News Regarding a Justin Jefferson Contract Extension
Amidst all the kerfuffle that was the 2024 NFL Draft, a big piece of Vikings news may have gone under the radar this weekend.
That news regards a potential Justin Jefferson contract extension. There have been plenty of rumors over the past few months amidst Jefferson’s radio row comments, other receivers getting new contracts, and cryptic social media posts. However, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s post-draft press conference seemed to suggest that a deal is getting close.
Latest Update on a Justin Jefferson Contract Extension
First off, per Adofo-Mensah, it seems that the two sides did decide to pause their negotiations during the 2024 NFL Draft:
“We continue to have great dialogue with their representatives,” Adofo-Mensah said. “The process is still ongoing. We did say, ‘Hey, [let’s pause] a couple days.’ The draft’s coming. They have players they represent. We have our process.”
The draft is a busy weekend for both agents and teams alike, so this isn’t all that uncommon of a process. The Vikings were one of the busier teams over the course of the weekend, making a pair of trades during the first round to land QB J.J. McCarthy as well as EDGE Dallas Turner. In total, they selected seven players.
However, another quote from Adofo-Mensah makes it seem as if a deal is a matter of “when” not “if” with Jefferson.
“Either way, whenever we sign him, we want Justin to have his whole week. You know that friend that has a birthday that takes the month? I think Justin would deserve his whole month if we signed a contract to celebrate it. We’re excited to work towards it. We’re going to keep going. You can’t have all these plans when you talk about all these visions and not talk about the king linchpin, so we’re going to keep working toward that end goal,” Adofo-Mensah said.
For a player the caliber of Jefferson, it makes sense that the Vikings would want to give that extension their full attention when it does happen.
In the end, it does appear that a contract is close. With Minnesota having their QB of the future in place, it should make Jefferson that much more eager to get a deal done.
