3 Reasons Why the Vikings Should Trade Up for a QB

In less than two weeks, the 2024 NFL Draft will begin.

For Minnesota Vikings fans, it is an exciting draft which could see the team make drastic changes that change the direction of the franchise for years to come. Currently holding two first-round picks, the Vikings are widely expected to make a trade up the board for a quarterback. Here are three reasons why Minnesota should make that trade.

The Talent

This year’s NFL Draft class is chock full of talent at the quarterback position, particularly at the top of the board. A “big four” at the top of the group is expected to lead the way which consists of Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and J.J. McCarthy.

It very well could take a top five pick in order for the Vikings to land any of them, and if the Vikings view any of them as solid fits in their offense, this is as good a time as any to strike.

Plan for the Future

As things currently stand in Minnesota’s QB room, there is very little plan past the 2024 season. Obviously, Kirk Cousins is no longer around after providing stability at the position for the past six seasons.

Minnesota signed Sam Darnold to a one-year deal back in March, but he should be viewed more as a bridge option than anything else. Meanwhile, Nick Mullens will also see his contract come to an end at the conclusion of the 2024 season (and could be on the trade market), and Jaren Hall is a project at this point in his NFL career.

If the Vikings want to solidify their future at the QB position, the draft offers a great opportunity to do that.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s Timeline

Back in January 2022, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah inked a four-year contract to become the next general manager in Minnesota. He is now entering the third year of that deal, and the discussions of whether or not the team should retain him will begin at some point in the next 12 months.

As of now, Adofo-Mensah has done a solid job of building a team that can contend in the NFC, but he has yet to make “the move” that stamps his impact on the Vikings. Trading up for a QB can be that move and ensure that he remains in Minnesota for years to come.
