Monday night did not turn out for the Minnesota Vikings as they lost to the Chicago Bears by a score of 12-10 and fell to 6-6 on the season.

Today, we will be breaking down the Vikings statistical rankings on defense through Week 12 as a whole, and where individual players stand. Shout out to Pro-Football-ReferencePro Football Focus, and nfeloapp.com for the numbers that went into this article.

NOTE: Individual PFF Grades are sorted to include players with at least 50% of the league leaders for defensive snaps at each position. With many of the teams now having their bye weeks behind them, we’ll also be transitioning towards per game numbers for the team statistics.

Total Defense

  • Points Allowed per Game: 20.2 (8th)
  • Total Yards Allowed per Game: 320.3 (13th)
  • Plays per Game: 63.9 (T-14th-most)
  • Yards per Play Allowed: 5.0 (10th)
  • First Downs Allowed per Game: 18.6 (10th)
  • Takeaways per Game: 1.33 (19th)
  • Third-Down Conversion Percentage Allowed: 41.8% (23rd)
  • Fourth-Down Conversion Percentage Allowed: 64.7% (T-26th)
  • Red Zone TD Percentage: 50.0% (9th)
  • Overall Defense PFF Grade: 73.6 (12th)
  • EPA/play: -0.07 (10th)

Ultimately, the Vikings defense broke down a bit on the final drive of the game, but that shouldn’t take away from just how well the group played on Monday. Through two-thirds of the season, the Vikings now employ a top-10 scoring defense, and they rank above average in just about every category. This unit is keeping Minnesota in games, and this upcoming bye is well-deserved for the group.

Pass Defense

  • Completions Allowed per Game: 24.8 (T-28th)
  • Pass Attempts Against per Game: 35.5 (T-23rd)
  • Passing Yards Allowed per Game: 224.3 (18th)
  • Net Yards per Pass Allowed: 5.9 (13th)
  • Passing First Downs Allowed per Game: 11.7 (23rd)
  • Passing TDs Allowed per Game: 1.25 (T-16th)
  • Interceptions per Game: 0.75 (T-18th)
  • Sacks per Game: 2.7 (T-15th)
  • Pass-Rush PFF Grade: 57.3 (31st)
  • Coverage PFF Grade: 88.8 (8th)
  • EPA/pass: -0.05 (9th)

Run Defense

  • Carries Against per Game: 25.8 (13th)
  • Rushing Yards Allowed per Game: 96.0 (10th)
  • Yards per Carry Allowed: 3.7 (4th)
  • Rushing First Downs Allowed per Game: 6.08 (16th)
  • Rushing TDs Allowed per Game: 0.58 (T-7th)
  • Fumbles Recovered per Game: 0.58 (T-16th)
  • Run Defense PFF Grade: 65.4 (T-12th)
  • EPA/run: -0.17 (6th)

Of course, the pass-rush of the Vikings remains the biggest weakness with this team. They are middle of the pack for sacks, but they simply don’t get enough consistent pressure on opposing QBs to generate a higher PFF grade.

However, that is really the only weakness with this team right now. They rank among the top-10 against both the pass and the run per EPA, and the Vikings run defense especially has been truly fantastic this season.
