The NFL Salary Cap is Going Up (By a Lot); The Vikings Should Rejoice

Well, at least we have the good news that the NFL salary cap is going to raise by quite a bit. Take a look at Field Yates with the word:

Being at $224.8 million is a notable increase. Last year, the cap was “only” $208,200,000. In other words, there has been a $16.6 million increase from 2022 to 2023, a reality that underscores the financial vibrancy of the league.

According to Over the Cap, Minnesota has $246,506,010 currently on the books. Even with the cap increase, the team has a bit of a hole to dig out of. OTC projects them as being more than $23 million over the cap.

Some of Minnesota’s top internal free agents are Patrick Peterson, Dalvin Tomlinson, Duke Shelley, Garrett Bradbury, and Khyiris Tonga. There are plenty more that Kwesi Adofo-Mensah will need to decide on. Retaining the two corners, for instance, seems like a priority.

The team will also be looking to sign impact free agents (such as Ogbonnia Okoronkwo or David Long). To be able to so, the Vikings will need to have the necessary financial flexibility. Moreover, one has to assume that the front office is monitoring the situation over in Indianapolis. How much of an impact could DeForest Buckner make for the Vikings?

It’s not totally unexpected to see the cap jump into the mid-220s. Rather, it’s simply good confirmation that Minnesota (along with the rest of the NFL) is going to be working with the expanded budget.

Since the end of the season, there has been quite a bit of chatter about how the Vikings will manoeuvre around the cap. There was a piece on how to clear $100 million, the 3 moves to create maximum space, and an extension for a certain controversial QB. Josh Frey has considered some receivers who make sense and has ventured into theorizing about life after Kirk Cousins.

In the coming weeks and months, we’ll be continuing to offer plenty of discussion about how things could go for the purple finances, so keep swinging by PurplePTSD.
