One of the more fascinating parts of the Vikings offseason has been the competiton between Sean Mannion and Kellen Mond. The veteran is battling with the sophomore for Minnesota’s QB2 job (and Nick Mullens, who they recently traded for).

Something that may help crystallize their performances so far rests in combining their statistics from the opening two games. The rationale is simply that Kevin O’Connell has played each around half of each game. Combining the two thus gives us some sense of how they performed, offering a stat total that more closely resembles a normal game’s performance.

Kellen Mond

Game #1: 9/14, 119 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs
Game #2: 10/20, 82 yards, 0 TDs, 2 INTs

Total Stats: 19/34, 201 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs

Sean Mannion

Game #1: 8/12, 79 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs
Game #2: 10/15, 65 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs

Total Stats: 18/27, 144 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs

Obviously, combining stats across two games isn’t perfect. It’s possible that Sean Mannion and/or Kellen Mond would have performed differently if they were given the chance to play a full game against a single opponent.

Be that as it may, the hope is that there can still be some insight from the combined stats.

Mannion’s numbers suggest he’s an accurate QB who didn’t find too much success pushing the ball downfield. Completing 18 out of his 27 passes means that two thirds of his throws are being completed. The drop from Zach Davidson (included in one of the videos above) would have helped both the completion percentage as well as the per-catch average. Mannion’s completions average a mere 8 yards.

Last season, Kirk Cousins averaged 11.3 yards per completion. Minnesota’s QB1 has never been in the single digits when it comes to the yards per completion average.

The two passing TDs from Mond are encouraging; the two interceptions are discouraging. Perhaps the tiebreaker is the mere fact that his completions, on average, go for more yards. The 19 catches went for an average of more than 10.5 yards. From what I can gather, this isn’t a dominant number, though it is a fair bit better than Mannion’s average.

The competition between Sean Mannion and Kellen Mond will probably extend into the third and final preseason game. Presumably, Nick Mullens will also get a chance to play. From there, O’Connell and his staff will need to decide who the team’s backup will be in Week 1.
