Vikings Will Play an Old Friend on Sunday
From 2018-2021, Ameer Abdullah was a Minnesota Viking. During that time, he provided the team with strong special teams play and depth at running back.
For the most part, Abdullah was a part-time player in the Minnesota offense. He had 23 carries for 115 yards rushing in 2019, the most in a season during his time in The Land of 10,000 Lakes. During that same season, he added on 15 receptions for 88 yards and a TD. More impressive, perhaps, are his special teams snap totals. In 2019, he was in on 60% of the special teams plays. That number was at 57% in 2020.
Currently, Ameer Abdullah is in Las Vegas. He scored a TD in the Raiders’ first preseason game:
According to the ESPN depth chart, Abdullah is the RB4 for the Raiders. Josh Jacobs is holding down the top spot. After him are Zamir White and Kenyan Drake. A strong preseason performance can obviously change things, so it’s certainly possible that the former Vikings RB climbs higher by the time Week 1 arrives. Moreover, running back is one of the toughest positions to play, a spot where players often get injured. Having plenty of depth is a good thing, making Abdullah’s chances at a roster spot more plausible.
Originally, Ameer Abdullah played for the Lions. He was a second-round selection back in 2015. He’s now 29-years-old and has 7 seasons behind him. A veteran RB who can contribute on offense and be a strong special teams contributor has value. Hopefully, that means he can stick around the Las Vegas roster so he can help the team reach its potential.
