The Harbaugh Seesaw Ends in A McVay Apprentice

For the past few days, Vikings fans have been subject to a rumor seesaw. Jim Harbaugh was reportedly interested in the Vikings; Jim Harbaugh was then a sure thing who just needed to complete the interview. Apparently, Harbaugh has decided to return to Michigan following his interview, meaning the Vikings will now turn their attention to Kevin O’Connell, the offensive coordinator for the LA Rams.

I, for one, am pleased that they’ve chosen an offensive coach. There has been such a lack of continuity on that side of the ball. It’s also notable that the Rams offense isn’t altogether different from the Vikings offense, meaning a lot of the personnel ought to be able to stick around town. Ideally, K/O will even be able to maximize the talent on the roster.

It’s worth remembering that Kevin O’Connell has some interesting overlap with Kirk Cousins. His first two coaching jobs in the NFL were with Cleveland and San Francisco. He then became the QB coach for two seasons and OC for one season in Washington. This took place from 2017-19. In other words, he was Cousins’ QB coach for a season. That background will make all the Cousins trade speculation extra interesting.

Following his time in Washington, K/O has been the OC in LA for three seasons. Obviously, their offense is among the best in the league. Whether he can replicate that elite level in Minnesota remains to be seen.

In an ideal world, K/O can hire a tremendous defensive coordinator like Vic Fangio. One also wonders if Andre Patterson would be given the chance; he’d likely do an excellent job. Andrew Janocko makes sense to keep around, perhaps as Minnesota’s offensive coordinator.

More news to come as the details emerge. Stay tuned, Vikings fans.
