Should Vikings Fans Care About The Pro Bowl?

I have next to no interest in all star games for the MLB, NHL, NBA, and NFL. Why would I? The games are played without competitive emotion, so I generally spend my time doing something else. Of course, the Pro Bowl has been making the rounds in Vikings media because Kirk Cousins got invited. Does this matter? Should it?

As Vikings.com explains, Minnesota will be sending several others alongside Cousins: “Cousins is one of five Vikings who are now slated to play in the Pro Bowl, along with Justin Jefferson, Dalvin Cook, Harrison Smith and Brian O’Neill.” There’s a case to be made that Justin Jefferson and Brian O’Neill are the only ones who truly deserves this honor, though we won’t go down that path here.

To my mind, the Pro Bowl is only a big deal when lesser-recognized Vikings get the recognition they deserve. O’Neill, for instance, is someone we should be excited about. The young RT is heading to the Pro Bowl, suggesting fans are finally recognizing his on-field play. Don’t forget that he also received a few All Pro votes. The present and future are bright for the young right tackle.

For Cousins, the honor seems relatively inconsequential for the fan, though perhaps it means something to him. The sense one gets is that he feels underrated. Previously, Cousins has bemoaned that he’s a .500 QB for his career. He has also expressed his desire to make deep playoff runs. If he improves in these areas, he’ll surely start to get more individual recognition.

There are some lingering questions surrounding whether Cousins will remain with the Vikings, and the Pro Bowl distinction will do little to assuage those questions. If you’re interested, the game will take place on Feb. 6.
