The Former Vikings Released During Second Round of Cuts

Another Tuesday has passed, so there are a handful more Vikings who have been released during the second round of cuts.

Similar to the first article that covers this topic, I’ll be relying on PFR to help recall some of the small details about the players. By no means am I offering a complete breakdown of their purple careers. Rather, it’s meant to be a bite-sized snapshot to refresh people’s memories; much more can be said. I’ve turned to the NFL cut tracker to help me follow who has been released.

Rashod Hill, OT

Before coming to Minnesota, Hill was with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He joined the Vikings in 2016. From 2017-2021, Hill was an important depth tackle. He received starts in each year in that time frame. The 6’6, 310 pound offensive tackle was with the Commanders, but he’s now looking for his next opportunity.

Jake Bargas, FB

After being released by Minnesota, Bargas got an opportunity with the division-rival Bears. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to stick around. He was active for 2 games for the Vikings from 2020-2021. He played 7 snaps on offense and 5 on special teams.

Gabe Brkic, K

Brkic was brought in during this offseason to compete with Greg Joseph. It didn’t take too long, though, before Joseph convinced the coaching staff that he was the best option. Brkic then went to the Packers, but they decided to cut him, as well.

Chris Herndon, TE

Minnesota traded for Herndon before the beginning of the 2021 season. An injury to Irv Smith Jr. created the need for another option at TE. In the end, the deal didn’t work out particularly well for the Vikings. Herndon finished his season with modest stats: 4 catches, 40 yards, and a touchdown. He’s still only 26.

A.J. Rose, RB

Rose never got the chance to play for the Vikings during the regular season. After being waived in the summer, the Rams brought him aboard. He has since been cut.

Similar to the last round, I should caution that there likely are former Vikings who I’ve missed in the list of cuts. Hopefully, this piece can still offer some insight for the fans who enjoy following the careers of former Vikings.

The next round of cuts involves teams getting their roster from 80 players down to 53 players. As a result, we’re very likely to see a lot more former Vikings included in the cuts list. Hopefully, we’ll see a lot of former players get an opportunity to make the roster for their current team. If that’s not an option, then the hope is that there will be openings on some practice squads.
