Former Vikings Third-Round Pick Lands with the Saints

When the Minnesota Vikings selected Wyatt Davis in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, fans were giddy to say the least. Pairing the bonafide Ohio State star offensive lineman with Christian Darrisaw seemed to solidify two of the most scrutinized positions on the entire roster.

Unfortunately, that tantalizing vision never came to pass. After injuries derailed his 2021 training camp, Davis never saw a snap with the offense during the regular season. After another disappointing showing this summer at camp, the Vikings said enough was enough and waived the once-promising right guard.
Davis’ waiving was just one part of a massive purge of the 2021 draft class by the new Vikings regime. Three of the four third-round picks from that class left the team, with only EDGE Patrick Jones II remaining. Davis eventually landed on the New York Giants practice squad, but mere weeks later, the former Vikings third-round pick has landed on another team’s 53-man roster: the New Orleans Saints.
The New Orleans Saints is a team that is banged up along the offensive line heading into the regular season. Rookie left tackle Trevor Penning is out for most of the season, and all three of Erik McCoy, Tanner Owen, and Landon Young were on the Saints first injury report. The only guards listed behind starters Andrus Peat and Cesar Ruiz are Owen and Calvin Throckmorton, which is not an ideal spot to be in.
The Saints needed to find some depth for their offensive line and given their tendency to take on Ohio State Buckeyes, Davis made sense as a depth piece. We’ll see how long he lasts on the roster, but coming out of the 2021 draft, there was certainly potential with him. Perhaps the Saints can finally drag that potential out of the former Vikings third-round pick.
