Q: What is the biggest single thing you’re watching for in the Vikings-49ers preseason game?

Sep 19, 2021; Glendale, Arizona, USA; Minnesota Vikings center Garrett Bradbury (56) and center Mason Cole. Mandatory Credit: Billy Hardiman-USA TODAY Sports.

A: The center position, with a side dish of right guard.

The only position on the Vikings roster with a vivid question mark is center — Garrett Bradbury’s spot. Minnesota could be rolling into a regular season merely accepting the spot as an utter weakness. We don’t like that on iota, especially with JC Tretter marinating on the free-agent wire for five months.

Hopefully, the Vikings have a quick hook and contingency plan for Bradbury — Chris Reed, anyone? — so that the fallout isn’t guaranteed futility.

We’re also curious to see if Ed Ingram has won the RG job for good. That position, like center, is a longstanding facepalm.

Q: Will Trishton Jackson make the 53-man roster?

Jul 27, 2022; Eagan, MN, USA; Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Trishton Jackson. Mandatory Credit: Matt Krohn-USA TODAY Sports.

A: No, probably not. The Vikings [suddenly] have too many good wide receivers — many of them young.

Minnesota is likely to keep six WRs on the 53-man roster. They will probably be these men:

  • Justin Jefferson
  • Adam Thielen
  • K.J. Osborn
  • Ihmir Smith-Marsette
  • Bisi Johnson
  • Jalen Nailor or Albert Wilson

Jackson is probably an odd man out, setting sights on the practice squad (which was expanded to 16 men this spring).

Q: Do you now wish the Vikings would’ve traded for Trey Lance?

Trey Lance
Jan 11, 2020; Frisco, Texas, USA; North Dakota State Bison quarterback Trey Lance. Mandatory Credit: Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports.

A: No — Lance cost the 49ers three 1st-Round picks and one 3rd-Rounder.

That’s like Justin Jefferson, Christian Darrisaw, Lewis Cine, and Brian Asamoah. So, no thanks.

Plus, nobody knows if Lance is any good. It’s all hype and hope at the moment. Lance will probably be competent and vindicate Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch. He just has to do it first. We’ll keep our Jefferson, Darrisaw, Cine, and Asamoah hodgepodge; thank you very much.
