It looks like the Vikings will be hiring Ed Donatell to be their new defensive coordinator.

Obviously, this is an exciting move for the Vikings. He had the Broncos playing good defense last season:

Take a look at what this Sports Illustrated article had to say:

Donatell, however, has 42 years of coaching experience, including 31 seasons in the NFL. Therefore, he will be able to lean on a wealth of knowledge and expertise. His last stop in the Fangio system, as Broncos defensive coordinator, actually saw Denver running a large amount of Cover 1: middle field closed man defense.

Mike Zimmer was more known for his zone coverages. When I think of a Zim defense, I think of a Cover-4 pattern-match defense. Cover-1 requires a different type of abilities from the defense. It’s also notable that he has the Vic Fangio connection and a background coaching a 3-4 defense.

Bringing in a new voice is indeed a good thing. The defense looked flat for two straight seasons, so a different energy and approach will be positive. It’s hard to imagine the defense could get much worse.

It’s also notable that this hire corresponds with the news that Andre Patterson is moving on:

It’s a new day in Minnesota. Ed Donatell will be the DC, and the Vikings will have plenty of new coaches working alongside him.
