Vikings Will Work Out Everson Griffen

Saturday’s game went poorly. Purple fans far and wide participated in the “Here-We-Go-Again” wailing and gnashing of teeth that often accompanies following this team. For many fans, the issue was the talent of the personnel, or lack thereof. Many people may be enthused, then, by the report that Everson Griffen will work out for the Vikings.
Griffen is an all-time Viking great, one who stands alongside the long list of tremendous defensive linemen from our team’s rich history. That being said, the Vikings need to do their due diligence here.
It makes very little sense to bring him back simply because of what he accomplished in the past. Rather, focus on what he can do in the future. If he can still be a strong option on third downs, then I’m all for it (as long as the price is right). Minnesota still has relatively abundant cap space: nearly $13.5 million.
Originally, Griffen was a fourth-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 2010. He went on to accumulate 74.5 sacks over his career with the Vikings. Between Dallas and Detroit last season, Griffen had 6 sacks. Keep in mind that Yannick Ngakoue finished as Minnesota’s leader last year with a mere 5 sacks. The Vikings, in other words, desperately need to improve on last year’s dismal pass rush.
If things work out, the d-line will be dominant.
