Earlier in the week, I relayed the news that rookie UDFA Gabe Brkic is behind in the kicking competition. Well, Minnesota wasn’t willing to see if the kid will improve. The team has decided to move on.

As a result, the lone kicker on the roster is veteran Greg Joseph. Last season, Joseph completed just under 87% of his field goals and 90% of his extra points. It’s also notable that he went 7/9 from 50+. No one is mistaking Joseph for Justin Tucker, but he’s a solid option.

If the Vikings wanted to bring someone else in to compete at kicker, they could explore a few of the free agent options. Michael Badgley has bounced around the NFL, kicking for the Chargers, Colts, and Titans. For his career, he has an 80.5 field goal percentage. Sam Ficken has been with the Rams and Jets, putting together a 72.9 field goal percentage. Neither number is particularly inspiring, and yet the deals would be mostly about increasing competition.

Otherwise, Minnesota could look to college kickers who haven’t yet signed. They might also see if anyone gets cut as training camp nears or gets underway.

With the roster opening, one wonders if the Vikings will look to address a position other than kicker. Increasing the competition along the lines is always a good thing (don’t forget that J.C. Tretter is still out there). The team could also look to a corner to help solidify the depth in the secondary.

Regardless, the team has decided to move on from their young kicker. Joseph thus looks like the clear-cut favorite for K1 responsibilities unless he really struggles during the offseason.
