Vikings Pass Rush May Get A Much-Needed Boost

We’ve known it was a possibility for a little while now. Now, the team has confirmed that former Packers EDGE Za’Darius Smith has visited the team for a free agent visit.
The veteran would complement the Vikings defense well. True, he is older, but he is still a capable player when he can stay on the field. Before getting hurt, he put together 13.5 and 12.5 sack seasons.
The recent news about Danielle Hunter sticking around town means the team could form an (albeit older) upside pair along the edge. The team desperately needs help pressuring the quarterback, especially given the shortcomings in the secondary. If the team can boast a formidable pass rush, the corners will need to cover for less time, making their job easier. As it stands, it looks like the team will mostly be improving their secondary through the draft and through low-cost veteran additions.
Like with any free agency rumor, we’ll need to wait and see. The team, as far as I can tell, has somewhere around $6.5 million in cap space (I don’t believe the Thielen re-structure got worked into the budget). Moving around some of the Hunter money could provide some more flexibility.
Previously, Smith agreed to terms with the Ravens for a 4-year, $35 million deal. He backed out to return to free agency.
