The Vikings Offense & Growing Expectations

Since taking over at head coach, Kevin O’Connell has been very positive. Fans, writers, and players have taken notice. There certainly is a different feeling and energy surrounding this team, and that’s largely a good thing. A notable component of this positive outlook, though, is some large expectations for the Vikings offense.

Yesterday, PFT‘s Mike Florio published a piece titled “Vikings offense moves toward becoming far less predictable.” In the piece, Florio quotes Justin Jefferson, who insists that the Vikings offense will be “less predictable.” Florio then goes on to quote O’Connell about how Minnesota will look to adjust on a week-to-week basis: “If you don’t have a system where you can make subtle tweaks and adjustments where you can go play this team that may be completely different from last Sunday, you probably don’t have a great system in the first place.”

Not too long ago, Ed Donatell spoke to the media. One of the things that stood out about his presser rested in his insistence that the offense has “cutting edge schemes and formations.”

As I’ve said before, a large part of what makes the offseason so exciting is the hope that accompanies being an NFL fan. Recent disappointment can fade into the background. Forward-looking optimism can take over. For the most part, that’s a good thing, and yet the heartbreak often comes after having high expectations. If Minnesota struggles on offense, then there is going to be a lot of disappointment.

Obviously, a fear of failing to meet expectations shouldn’t dissuade a team from being positive about what they’re building. The Vikings offense does have tremendous talent. If – and a lot hinges on the “if” – O’Connell can unlock his side’s full potential, it won’t be surprising to see them perform on par with the best NFL offenses.

Like a lot of other things in the offseason, we’ll need to wait for actual games to see what this team can do. Promises about being less predictable, being able to adjust on a weekly basis, and having a cutting edge approach will soon be put to the test.
