For the most part, fans were underwhelmed with Oli Udoh at right guard. At first, the 2019 sixth rounder performed surprisingly well, giving many optimism that he could solidify the right side. As the season went on, though, Udoh struggled. He was eventually replaced in the starting lineup.

Given this history, why should fans be optimistic? Well, it’s because he has starting experience at multiple spots. Perhaps the new coaching staff keeps him as someone who can fill in at most of the positions along the o-line.

Originally, Oli Udoh was brought in as an upside backup tackle. At 6-6, 320, Udoh certainly fits the ideal build for an NFL tackle. He has now spent three years in the NFL, and he’s still only 25. Pro Football Reference suggests that his playing time has increased in all three seasons, with Year 3 being the most dramatic increase. Last season, Udoh got in on 94% of the offense’s snaps for the games he played. He has also been a contributor on special teams since his rookie year.

According to PFF, Udoh didn’t play great in 2021. He comes in with a 54.4 score overall. His pass blocking is a paltry 39.0. The overall grade puts him at 65th out of 82 qualifying guards. In other words, Udoh is an underwhelming option as a starter.

One wonders, though, if he could be an option as the team’s swing tackle. He could also be relied upon to kick inside if there’s an emergency along the iOL (with center being the exception). Being able to contribute at multiple spots is an attractive ability for a depth player.

Oli Udoh has a role with a NFL team. Whether that’s with the Vikings remains to be seen. There is more competition for him to overcome, and yet it wouldn’t be surprising if he finds a way to stick around because of his versatility.
