Kirk Cousins Just Got a Lot More Valuable on The Trade Market

Aaron Rodgers has reportedly agreed to a massive extension to stay in Green Bay, so expect Kirk Cousins to start generating more interest on the trade market.

The most immediate implication for this deal is that the Packers will be relevant in the NFC for at least a couple more years. It also means that Davante Adams will almost certainly be back. They’ll likely need to cut other talented players to make it work, though.

Several teams were interested in bringing Aaron Rodgers over, so one wonders if they’ll now turn their attention to Kirk Cousins.

Minnesota’s grossly overpaid QB1 has accomplished very little in his four years as a Viking. True, there was the one playoff win and some nice stats, but one playoff appearance in four years isn’t what anyone had in mind. The defense has been brutal these past two seasons, so there’s certainly something to be said for KC not getting the support he needs.

Would Denver be willing to offer a first-round selection (and perhaps more) to acquire Cousins? The George Paton connection makes it plausible. Moreover, their new head coach – Nathaniel Hackett – runs a system that would fit Cousins well. Washington seems to also be looking for a QB, but the chances of him heading back are next to none.

Otherwise, keep an eye on a team like Pittsburgh. There’s enough talent there to try avoiding a full scale rebuild. To pull it off, though, they’ll need stronger QB play. Perhaps Minnesota’s veteran QB will be seen as the solution.

Of course, underlying all this speculation is the Vikings organization and Cousins himself. At the combine, KAM spoke about how he was going to make the decision that’s best for the Vikings as he pursues a middle ground solution with Cousins. To my mind, that means a sensible extension. However, it could also mean playing hardball.

If they can’t agree to a reasonable deal, perhaps Kwesi sends him out to the highest bidder. There ought to be more bidders now than before the Rodgers news broke.
