This past April, the Minnesota Vikings selected Kellen Mond with the 66th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. It looked like a potential move towards the post-Kirk Cousins Minnesota Vikings.

After a few preseason games, it seemed clear that Mond was going to be a work in progress, though. He showed flashes of good quarterback play, but overall, he seemed like he was trying to do too much, attempting to will throws into traffic and just moving a little too fast for his own good.

Since the preseason, as expected, we haven’t seen any of Mond with Captain Kirk taking the starting QB duties. This week though, we will at least see the rookie suit up for a game. Early Sunday morning, Sean Mannion entered the Covid protocols, taking him out for the Vikings matchup with the LA Rams. As next man up, Mond takes over the QB2 role.

This also comes on the heels of Monday night when Kirk Cousins suffered a fractured rib against the Chicago Bears. Cousins, a true ironman, will play through the injury, but this crack in the armor puts Minnesota’s QB2 position in the spotlight. Is Mond really ready to take over under center for the Vikings? Hopefully we don’t have to find out in the year 2021.
