It’s Time To Bring Bridgewater Back

Teddy Bridgewater has long been a fan favorite in Minnesota (though, at times, he can cause debate). There were moments when he looked like he would be the team’s long-term solution under center, largely because he’s a tremendous leader, someone who the rest of the roster willingly followed into battle.
Unfortunately, he has had far more than his fair share of injuries. It began with the brutal knee injury that led to the Sam Bradford trade. He has had several other injuries, though.
For this reason, it would be unwise for Minnesota to bring him in as the starter. Rather, bring Teddy Bridgewater to Minnesota so he can be the backup. Someone who has some sneaky athleticism and a mid-level arm alongside high-level intelligence, competitiveness, and leadership is an ideal backup. That’s Teddy Two Gloves.
Over the Cap explains that last season Denver was only on the hook for just over $4.4 million for TB (Carolina ended up paying a significant amount of money to facilitate the trade between the teams). A deal that comes in at a similar average would be a wise investment for the Vikings.
With the season on the line in Week 17, the Vikings had to play Sean Mannion against Green Bay. The outcome, predictably, wasn’t great. Having a strong QB2 may have kept the season alive. Plus, no one should forget just how magical 2017 was. It doesn’t happen unless the team has a great backup QB.
Bridgewater has offered very little proof that he can be a long-term starter, though he has shown at various points that he can be good for a short-to-intermediate stretch of games.
Money, of course, isn’t infinite, a truth that even applies to the NFL. Carving out money for the backup QB spot will be a controversial move among many. Even still, it would be a wise investment. Do you really want Cousins to have essentially no competition? To be clear, Bridgewater won’t beat him out for the QB1 spot, though there’s something to be said for having a player who could. Recently, there hasn’t been anyone who could actually take snaps in a game for Captain Kirk. Bridgewater could push Cousins while also being a rock-solid option if he needed to start.
As long as the expected happens, Minnesota will have an offense-first head coach. They already have a new general manager. Perhaps this combination will lead to a different approach to the purple finances. If so, then Teddy Bridgewater makes a lot of sense as the QB2 in Minnesota.
