Many Vikings fans continue to be underwhelmed by the snail pace that characterizes Minnesota’s moves (or lack thereof). Yesterday, the lone firm news was that Jordan Hicks is being brought aboard. True, there were some Jordan Berry rumblings, but my understanding is that deal is still in the works. Overall, a slow day for the Vikings in day 2 of the NFL’s legal tampering period.

Day 2 Grade: C

I’m pretty neutral on the Hicks signing. Adding someone to help at LB was needed, though I would have been more enthused about Alexander Johnson or Josey Jewell. Ed Donatell knows both far better than I do, so we’ll need to trust his perspective.

Hicks will likely play alongside Eric Kendricks. One thought that hasn’t been explored quite as much, though, is if Hicks could be the replacement to Kendricks rather than partner in crime. I really don’t believe that’s the case, but older, expensive LBs under new leadership often find themselves in a different uniform.

The real concern for the defense rests at corner and along the edge. If there isn’t a talent infusion at these spots, the team will be in a tough spot (especially at corner). I know there is talent in the draft at these positions, but banking on rookies to instantly come in to elevate a roster is often foolish.

Where Does The Team Go From Here?

Well, in my estimation, they need to clear roughly $8 million before 4 ET today. Doing so will allow them to be cap compliant as the new league year begins.

I’d expect to hear about Adam Thielen today, who has hinted that he is looking to stick around town. Having him in the offense helps to open things up even more for Justin Jefferson and Dalvin Cook. He’s older, but still very important to the team. Plus, he’s really great in the red zone.

I’m also keeping my eye on several notable free agents. JC Tretter, Bradley Bozeman, Za’Darius Smith, Bryce Callahan, Lorenzo Carter, and Darious Williams are all names to monitor.
