After months of rehab for a rookie season ACL tear, second-year corner Mike Hughes is now off the PUP list and part of the Vikings’ active roster.

Funny how things happen.

In a fairly surprising move today, the Vikings’ cleared their first round pick of 2018 for practice. Immediately, speculation began as to what role Hughes might play in the final exhibition game and looming regular season.

Mike Zimmer, no doubt a little happier with such news, will most likely be patient with Hughes, despite being a bit disappointed with his defensive secondary’s performance on Saturday against the Arizona Cardinals.

“We had some situations, a couple third downs that we weren’t tight enough on receivers in there and then we misfit the screen one time,” Zimmer said at a recent press conference.

Elaborating in regard to the Vikings’ defense as a whole, Zimmer seemed resolved to being able to fix a few mistakes that occurred.

“We had a miscommunication on one deep ball. We’ve got to play better on the backend but as far as guys knowing what to do and playing the right plays and playing the run, things like that, it was pretty darn good.”

With reserve cornerback Holton Hill suspended eight games to start the 2019 season, Hughes’ return couldn’t come at a better time.

Not only for Vikings’ coaches, but for the fans themselves, a group unpleasantly surprised to see the Vikings give up 292 passing yards to rookie quarterback Kyler Murray and obscure backup Brett Hundley on Saturday.
