Detroit’s Notable Offseason Continues

First, it was HBO’s Hard Knocks. Then, it was news of hosting the 2024 NFL Draft. What can’t the Detroit Lions do? Soon, perhaps, they will have a respectable season on the field.

Stranger things have happened, folks.

The perpetually pathetic Lions appear to be heading in the right direction. Appearances, of course, often prove to be misguided. Nevertheless, it’s always notable when Detroit – perhaps the worst franchise in the NFL – makes the news for positive reasons.

I, for one, am very excited to see them on Hard Knocks. The annual HBO series often leads to great viewing. Being able to see Dan Campbell behind the scenes will make for must-see TV. Maybe the team finally gets that real lion for practices.

The draft, moreover, is positive news for the Lions franchise. True, it doesn’t do anything for them on the field, but the ownership group must be happy about the chance to show off.

I’m among those who believes that the Lions are heading in the right direction. They’re several years away from football relevance, and yet they’ve made some positive moves. The Matt Patricia era, mercifully, is in the rear view mirror. Campbell seems well liked by Detroit fans, and his Lions play hard for him.

The team won’t be going anywhere with Jared Goff at QB, and that’s OK. Opting for Malik Willis at #2 would give the team a QB to develop behind a once-highly-regarded veteran. At the owner’s meeting, Lions GM Brad Holmes openly advertised that he was open for business with the #2 selection. Perhaps there will be an offer tempting enough to pull the trigger. Forced to guess, though, I’d say those Lions stay where they are, choosing Willis to be their next QB1.

The Detroit Lions are on the rise. In a few seasons, the North may belong to them.
