Camryn Bynum and Sky-High Ambition

A college corner, Camryn Bynum performed well in his rookie year, especially give the switch over to safety. His positive impact didn’t go unnoticed, receiving praise from Harrison Smith: “Cam balled last year whenever he got the chance, so that’s on tape. He’s a smart guy, really productive player, and he’s one of those guys you want to have in your room. He’s a great presence, is very energetic, just a good guy to be around.”

Indeed, Bynum was impressive.

PFF gave him a very healthy 78.3 score. Keep in mind that he only had a little more than 200 snaps. Even still, it’s encouraging to see the strong grade. One thinks of the impressive interception from the Ravens game as perhaps the defining moment of his rookie campaign:

All of these details ought to leave Vikings fans feeling encouraged about how Camryn Bynum will perform in 2022. Just know that there’s no way your expectations for him are anywhere close to his own expectations for himself:

I’m trying to be the best ever. That’s the biggest thing I do. That’s why I play the game. That’s why I put in the extra time. I’m not just trying to be here and make money, I’m trying to be the best football player regardless in history.

Overtaking Tom Brady is next to impossible. I have as much chance of becoming the NFL’s greatest coach in history (not happening) as Bynum does of one day surpassing Brady. I’d be thrilled to be wrong on both counts.

A more realistic – but still majorly lofty – goal would be to try to replicate the career that Harrison Smith has had. A former first-round pick, Smith is a 6-time Pro Bowler and an All Pro. He has 16.5 sacks, 29 interceptions, and 861 tackles in his ten-year career. If his playing days ended today, Smith would deserve to get into Canton. I’ll argue with anyone who doesn’t think Smith is the best safety of his generation.

In other words, Camryn Bynum would be wise to focus-in on matching his safety counterpart. Replicating Smith’s career would be a massive success for the sophomore safety.
