Vikings rookie Jake Golday is carrying reasonably beefy expectations going into his debut NFL season. So much of what is inspiring optimism is the versatile manner in which he was used as a college player.

Standing at 6’4″ and weighing 240 pounds, Mr. Golday looks quite a lot like Andrew Van Ginkel, somebody who stands at 6’4″ and 242 pounds. Expecting the newcomer to perfectly mimic what Van Ginkel can do is unrealistic. Can he nevertheless do some of the things that Van Ginkel does as early as 2026? At a basic starting point, Golday’s versatility should allow for such a possibility to get tested out.

Vikings Rookie Jake Golday Boasts Coveted Versatility

Minnesota’s ideal world means living within sophisticated aggression. Both Kevin O’Connell, the main architect behind the offense, and Brian Flores, known as “The Mad Scientist” for the defense, want to live within that ethos.

Essentially, the Vikings are trying to keep the other team off balance by always being on the attack. That doesn’t necessarily mean the Vikings are constantly running four verticals on offense while then blitzing eight men on defense (even if those plays have merit from time to time). Things are most sophisticated than that. The Vikings want to be multiple, capable of going all-out but boasting the ability to do all kinds of things at different times.

Bringing that basic idea to life, sophisticated aggression, is a roster full of versatile players.

Check out how Golday described his abilities: “I feel like the weight that I’m at right now is kind of really versatile. Being like the 240 mark is kind of where I’m at right now. So I can play the edge, I can set the edge if I need to. But I also have the ability to drop into space and make plays in space.”

“That all just came down to being in my playbook and studying a lot,” Golday explained about being capable of handling the mental workload of multiple spots, “I pride myself on just, I’m not the smartest guy in the room but I’m going to try the hardest.”

Per PFF, Jake Golday had 314 snaps in the box (think normal linebacker duties) while being in the slot for 248 snaps. He had 117 snaps along the defensive line to function as an edge rusher. Standing out from within the mix is a sizzling 90.6 run defense grade.

The current vantage point suggests that the Vikings are going to lean on Blake Cashman and Eric Wilson as the starting off-ball linebackers. Meanwhile, the edge rushers — technically the team’s outside linebackers — are set to be Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner. Quite possibly, the main backup at each of those four spots is Golday.

Combining his physical build, his work ethic, and his excellent athleticism means Golday boasts unique potential. Tasking the rookie with being a four-in-one player isn’t a foregone conclusion, but the possibility is out there.

Until yesterday, Jake Golday had been the lone remaining draft pick who hadn’t signed, but he put pen to paper. The young defender is 22.
