After focusing on in-house free agents and roster cuts over the last few days, the Minnesota Vikings took about one hour into the legal tampering window to acquire their first external free agent.

According to NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe, the Vikings have agreed to terms with former Steelers corner James Pierre. He reported on social media, “Vikings have agreed to terms with CB James Pierre on a two-year, $8.5 million deal with $3.7 million guaranteed, per his agent Toney Scott. Pierre gets a $2.5 million signing bonus.”

Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback James Pierre (42) intercepted a pass to Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins (5) in the fourth quarter of the NFL Week 11 game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cincinnati Bengals at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2025. The Bengals lost 34-12.

It’s an annual ritual that Minnesota’s cornerback room is concerning entering the offseason (and sometimes even the regular season). Pierre joins a group that is headlined by starters from last year, Byron Murphy and Isaiah Rodgers, with minimal depth behind the duo.

Pierre is 29 and came into the league as an undrafted rookie in 2020, signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He spent his entire career under Mike Tomlin in the AFC North, except for a short stop in Washington. The Commanders signed him in March of 2024 and later released him prior to the season. He then headed back to Pittsburgh.

In six campaigns, the Florida Atlantic product has played in 95 career games (13 starts), registering 147 tackles and 4 INTs. He likely slots in behind both Murphy and Rodgers as the CB3. That cornerback room is still a player or two short unless either Dwight McGlothern or Zemaiah Vaughn can take a massive step forward.

Pierre provides a veteran backup presence. Brian Flores has been a big fan of veteran corners. Those are generally reliable at making the right coverage decisions. Given his contract, he can be viewed as a depth upgrade over Fabian Moreau, who was suddenly asked to play a heavy role in last year’s unit. Jeff Okudah couldn’t revive his career in the Twin Cities and is once again a free agent this year.

The new Viking played 376 snaps last season. That’s about the rate a CB3 should expect to play in Minnesota’s rotation. As an outside corner, his presence allows the Vikings to move Murphy into the slot on nickel downs.

The former Steeler is reuniting with ex-Steelers coaches Brian Flores (DC) and Gerald Alexander (DB coach).

Jack Markowski of the Steelers version of SI wrote about the corner, “One of the more pleasant surprises for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, retaining James Pierre won’t be straightforward once the legal tampering period officially begins. According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, there are right around eight to nine teams who are ‘expected to have preliminary interest’ in Pierre.”

Despite the heavy interest, the Vikings made the race.

Markowski added, “He did not allow a touchdown in coverage, per Pro Football Reference, while holding opposing quarterbacks to a completion percentage of just 42.9 on 35 targets across 376 coverage snaps. Pierre blossomed into a true impact player for the Steelers in his fifth season with the organization last year, and while there are other enticing veterans in free agency, bringing him back is the easiest path forward. The issue, though, is that his market appears to be booming, complicating matters in the process.”

According to PFF, he was targeted 33 times last year, allowing only 14 catches for 142 yards. He earned an elite PFF grade of 86.8.

At 29, Pierre won’t be the long-term solution the Vikings have been looking for this decade, but he could be a valuable addition to round out the secondary.
