Vikings Miss Out on Free Agent WR Option

Free agency didn’t bring many changes to the Minnesota Vikings roster, but receiver Jalen Nailor still leaves a hole on offense. Folks speculated whether the franchise might acquire one of Kyler Murray’s old friends from his Arizona days, but Christian Kirk signed elsewhere. The good news is that there are still some other pass-catchers available.

With Nailor’s departure, the Vikings lack a WR3 playmaker with the ability to produce about 400-500 yards and a handful of touchdowns. Though he once was a 1,000-yard receiver, the 2026 version of Kirk fit that profile.

Injuries have slowed Kirk down over the last couple of seasons and he was demoted to WR2 and WR3 roles with the Jaguars and Texans. Yet in 21 games, he caught 55 passes for 618 yards. Over a full season, that equals a 17-game pace of 44 receptions for 500 yards.

Nailor is a different type of wideout and more responsible for providing a deep threat to an offense rather than Kirk’s slot presence, but he had 28 catches for 414 yards and 29 catches for 444 yards over the last two seasons, which Kirk could’ve easily replaced.

Unfortunately, Murray’s former receiver signed with the San Francisco 49ers.

ESPN’s Nick Wagoner wrote on Monday, “For the second time in a week the San Francisco 49ers added a veteran to their wide receiver room, agreeing to terms on a one-year deal with Christian Kirk, a source told ESPN.”

It’s a one-year deal worth $6 million. The Vikings don’t have too much cap space, but they could fit that in one way or another.

Kirk, a 2018 draftee, spent three of his first four seasons in the NFL with Murray throwing him the ball before leaving for Jacksonville in 2022. They also shared some time at Texas A&M before Murray transferred to Oklahoma.

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray (1) warms up with wide receiver Christian Kirk before playing against the Los Angeles Rams at State Farm Stadium December 1, 2019.

Cardinals writer Darren Urban shared in 2020: “It’s the kind of production, Murray said, that ‘was going to happen eventually.’ Murray saw the possibility all the way back in high school, when the two met each other during summer camps and 7-on-7 tournaments, connecting through their talent and their eventual school (Texas A&M) and frequently FaceTiming and texting prior to their respective prep games on Friday nights. ‘Forming that bond was cool,’ Kirk said, adding, ‘it’s like we were best friends off the jump.'”

Another connection to the Vikings is with his high school teammate, Byron Murphy, who’s another former Cardinal. The corner signed a massive deal with the Vikings a year ago and likely would’ve enjoyed facing him in practice.

Well, that idea is kaput. Nailor’s production has to be replaced in a different way.

Kirk isn’t the only former Arizona pass-catcher on the market. There are still future Hall of Famer DeAndre Hopkins, Murray’s college and pro teammate Hollywood Brown, and speedy Greg Dortch, who’s also bringing return ability to the table.

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins (10) celebrates after a touchdown catch against the Los Angeles Chargers during the first quarter at State Farm Stadium in Glendale on Nov. 27, 2022.

All three fit the profile of a receiver that doesn’t break the bank and can complete the receiver trio. The Vikings need a third or fourth option in the passing game, though that might be a hard pill to swallow for Hopkins, who’s on the tail end of his phenomenal career. They have all caught passes from Murray in Arizona and the connection and knowledge of each other’s tendencies are already there.

The Vikings could also decide to address the situation internally. Second-year receiver Tai Felton and a few younger depth options will have an opportunity to prove they can take on a larger role during training camp. Minnesota’s coaching staff has often emphasized development from within, and Kevin O’Connell’s offense has historically been able to distribute targets beyond the top two receivers. If someone in that group emerges, the urgency to add a veteran might fade quickly.

Still, the Vikings will likely continue monitoring the market. Free agency is never truly over, and Minnesota could strike if the right opportunity presents itself. For now, missing out on Christian Kirk simply shifts the focus to other options as the Vikings look to round out Kyler Murray’s (or J.J. McCarthy’s, if he’s winning the reported competition) supporting cast heading into the 2026 season.
