No Deal Yet for the Vikings and Jauan Jennings

After the draft, the Minnesota Vikings look to fill remaining needs in free agency. A prominent one is wide receiver, as Jalen Nailor vacated his WR3 spot last month. Besides many players who are well past their primes, the top player on the market might be ex-49ers wideout Jauan Jennings.

Jennings visited the Vikings this week, indicating strong interest both ways. At this, however, he hasn’t signed a contract and has even left the state.

A social media post, reproducing KSTP’s Darren Wolfson, provided the update, “Jauan Jennings visit with the Vikings has concluded, and he left Minnesota without a deal, Darren Wolfson mentioned via SKOR North.”

“The visit ‘went well,’ and talks are ongoing between the two sides. According to Wolfson, Minnesota seems interested in a one-year deal, and his skills as a blocker and pass-catcher are seen as a strong fit.”

Jennings is a strong fit for the simple fact that he’s a decent receiver and the Vikings could use another one of those. At this point, it’s pretty much Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and a bunch of depth players.

Given Kevin O’Connell’s 11-personnel (one tight end, one running back, three receivers), adding a third WR certainly makes sense for Minnesota.

Jennings, 28, is coming off his two most productive seasons, with 975 yards and six touchdowns in 2024, followed by 643 yards and nine scores in 2025. The 49ers replaced him with potential Hall of Famer Mike Evans. In the draft, De’Zhaun Stribling out of Ole Miss also joined the franchise with the 33rd overall pick.

Their GM John Lynch said last month, “He’ll find a good home, and Jauan will go play great football for someone. I can’t say enough for what that guy did; when that guy stepped between the lines, man, he was a presence, and they had to deal with him, and he won us a lot of games.”

An intriguing element is Jennings’ skill set. At 6’3″ and 212 lbs, he’d bring some size and physicality to an otherwise smaller receiving group. Though both Jefferson and Addison are willing blockers, they can lack the mass to make a difference in that area. Jennings is known for his blocking talent.

Furthermore, Jennings is coming from a team with a similar offensive system. Certainly, there are some differences, but Kyle Shanahan’s offense has a ton of parallels to Kevin O’Connell’s. A smooth transition seems likely.

Jennings could complete a receiving room that already has one of the elite duos in all of football. An offense that can deploy record-breaker Jefferson and his sidekick Addison with Jennings as a third option, as well as tight end T.J. Hockenson and a solid running back duo of Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason, has all the weapons necessary to be successful.

Of course, that success then depends on the quarterback play, as Skol Nation witnessed last season. Kyler Murray is in the building to improve the passing attack if J.J. McCarthy can’t provide better play than he did in his first year as a starter.

Jennings could now check in with other teams. It’s quite possible that he won’t sign with anyone for weeks or months, but the Vikings are currently the frontrunners.
