While the Minnesota Vikings navigate through the salary cap deficit, other organizations make moves to set up their squad for the upcoming season. On Thursday, the Houston Texans handed longtime Vikings defender Danielle Hunter a massive contract extension. The payday will make some Vikings fans wonder what could have been had Minnesota found a way to keep its longtime defensive cornerstone.

Hunter, who signed with his hometown Texans in the 2024 offseason, received a lucrative extension last offseason and Houston doubled down again this year.

National reporter Jordan Schultz noted on social media, “BREAKING: The #Texans and 5x Pro Bowl DE Danielle Hunter are finalizing a 1-year, $40.1M fully guaranteed extension, per sources. Hunter has been on fully guaranteed money with Houston since arriving in 2024, totaling $124.7M, and this deal takes him to over $218M in career earnings.”

That total now places him among the highest-earning defenders in NFL history.

It’s a fully guaranteed contract extension through the 2027 season. He was set to enter a contract year with the Texans. His next deal makes him the 4th-highest-paid edge rusher in the NFL and one of the top-paid non-QBs overall. When he left the Twin Cities, Hunter signed a two-year deal worth $49 million. Last year’s extension will pay him another $35.6 million this year, followed by the new deal tacked on in 2027.

Hunter used to be a productive player for the Vikings and he hasn’t slowed down since leaving, forming arguably the top edge rushing duo in the league with 2023 3rd overall pick Will Anderson.

Minnesota’s 2015 Draft choice has recorded 27 sacks over the last two campaigns, adding 100 tackles and 32 tackles for loss to his scorecard. He was a Pro Bowler in 2024 and a second-team All-Pro in 2025. Coming off a season with 15 sacks in the regular season and another 3 in the playoffs, the Texans reward their premier rusher.

Hunter was part of the Vikings’ elite Draft class in 2015, next to fellow steal Stefon Diggs, 2nd-rounder Eric Kendricks, and top pick Trae Waynes. Together, the group formed the backbone of the Mike Zimmer years.

Before his exit, Hunter had spent his previous nine seasons in the Twin Cities. His career started buried on the depth chart behind starting defensive ends Everson Griffen and Brian Robison. Coming out of college, Hunter possessed freakish athleticism, but his sack production was nonexistent in college, allowing Spielman to take a chance in the third round.

He quickly showed promise, though, tabulating six sacks in his rookie year as a rotational pass-rush specialist. His role expanded in year two, and so did his sacks (12.5).

Hunter’s first season as a full-time starter came in 2017, his third season. His sack total dipped to seven, with more on his plate in the running game. In each of the following two campaigns, however, he recorded 14.5 sacks.

His 2020 season was lost due to the infamous tweak that turned out to be a herniated disc in his neck. In 2021, a torn pec limited him to 7 games, during which he still recorded 6 sacks.

Many doubted him, and the Vikings kept delaying a possible contract extension. His bounce-back year in 2022 ended with 10.5 sacks, and he elevated that output to 16.5 in Brian Flores’ 2023 defense. Hunter was pretty much unstoppable.

Still, the Vikings allowed him to leave via free agency, and it was clear he wanted to come home to Houston, where he enjoyed another remarkable season next to Will Anderson, adding 12 sacks to his career total.

In 10 seasons and 153 career games, Hunter has registered 114.5 sacks and 562 tackles. Outside of the injury-riddled two-year stretch, Hunter has been reliable, not missing any other game in his career.

Minnesota once built its defense around Hunter. Years later, he’s still dominating — and getting paid like it. Houston is betting that his prime isn’t over, and if the production continues, Hunter’s résumé may eventually spark Hall of Fame conversations.
