Vikings Bring Jonathan Greenard Situation to a Close

Acquiring defender Jonathan Greenard in 2024 was a massive success for the Minnesota Vikings, as he has been one of the better edge defenders in football while not being paid nearly as much as some of his peers. Ultimately, that was the problem. He wanted a raise and the Vikings allowed him to seek one, just not in Minnesota.

The 2024 Pro Bowler was part of the league’s rumor mill since a report emerged in March about a potential trade. On Friday, he vanished from those speculations, but not because he will remain with the Vikings. No, the franchise shipped him to Philadelphia for a pair of third-rounders.

Lindsey Young of Vikings.com wrote during the second round of the NFL Draft, “The Vikings have traded Jonathan Greenard. Minnesota traded the outside linebacker and the 244th overall pick of 2026 to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a third-round pick in 2026 (98th overall) and a third-round pick in 2027, the team announced Friday during Day 2 of the 2026 NFL Draft.”

Greenard joined the club in free agency in 2024. He entered the building with Andrew Van Ginkel in a revamped Minnesota pass rush and logged 12 sacks in his first season with the purple team. Last year, his production dipped to only three sacks, but he still generated pressure at a high rate.

After the conclusion of the 2025 season, Greenard’s contract reached a fascinating point. Without any guarantees remaining and underpaid at $19 million per year, he wanted more money and more guarantees, something the Vikings apparently were not eager to give him.

The Eagles handed him a new four-year deal worth $100 million. Half of that is guaranteed. One glance at the compensation for edge rushers around the league shows that he is still somewhat cheap compared to other rushers in his tier.

ESPN’s Kevin Seifert wrote after Day 2 of the NFL Draft, “While making clear that owners Zygi and Mark Wilf have not ordered a reduction in spending, Brzezinski said: ‘We have just spent so much money the last several years that it’s not sustainable for us to move forward. Our salary cap situation has been very, very challenging.’ The Vikings will save $12.25 million in cap space with the deal and will not have to pay any of Greenard’s cash salary.”

Brzezinski has been part of the front office that has spent all the money in recent years. Trading Greenard isn’t the only way to save money, but it’s the way the franchise decided to go.

Brzezinski added, “The value ends up being what the market will pay. [Greenard] is a great player and I’m sure people have a lot of opinions as far as what the appropriate value should be for him. All I can say is considering everything, we thought it was in the best interest of all parties. Again, people can judge whether or not it was fair or reasonable for a player of that caliber, and we understand that, but it’s what the market would pay.”

One guy who will be in the focus is 2024 first-rounder Dallas Turner, who’s now pretty much assured the starting role. He played well when Greenard missed time with a shoulder injury last year, showing why the Vikings spent a ton of draft capital to acquire him two years ago. His promotion opens a hole at backup outside linebacker, though.

With the third-rounder that arrived from Philadelphia, the Vikings selected Miami’s safety, Jakobe Thomas.

Greenard, 28, was Minnesota’s pressure leader in 2024 and 2025, as well as a vocal leader in the locker room. The organization now needs to replace him.
