As far as ex-Vikings players go, RB Cam Akers deserves a spot in Minnesota’s Hall of Fame.

The veteran runner got added in 2023 via trade. Once again, Akers was added with a low-level trade in 2024. Moving through 2025, the Vikings appeared to learn their lesson, adding him as a free agent before then showing him the door. Mr. Akers ended up with the Seahawks, a team that would climb to the top of Mount Lombardi.

Ex-Viking Cam Akers Still a Seahawk

ESPN’s Adam Schefter kicked over the update: “Seahawks signed 15 players to future contracts on Thursday, including veteran running backs Velus Jones Jr. and Cam Akers, both of whom played in Seattle’s Super Bowl LX win over the Patriots.”

Right now, the Seahawks look pretty brilliant.

Standing above all other realities is that of tremendous draft success. Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III got scooped up in the 2nd of the 2022 NFL Draft (an event that creates great regret in Minnesota). Other indispensable talents such as CB Devon Witherspoon, CB Tariq Woolen (Vikings fit?), OT Charles Cross, WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and many others are homegrown talents.

Building off that strong foundation meant shrewd adds via trade and within free agency.

Most notably, there was the decision to hand over a contract to Sam Darnold. The veteran has gone from draft bust with the Jets to Super Bowl quarterback with the Seahawks. Bridging the gap between those stops has been work as a Panther, 49er, and Viking. Give Darnold a ton of credit.

Other pickups — WR Cooper Kupp, DT Leonard Williams, and EDGE DeMarcus Lawrence (among others) — were critical pieces of the winning puzzle.

Pretty quietly, veteran runner Cam Akers was hanging around in Seattle, as well.

Nobody sees the ex-Vikings runner as being as important as Darnold, Kupp, and so on. He was, nevertheless, someone to reinforce the depth. Losing runner Zach Charbonnet to a season-ending injury made Akers even more valuable.

The final stat tally for Cam Akers’ 2025 isn’t the most impressive. He turned 5 carries into 19 rushing yards. A single target in the passing game went incomplete. He did, however, throw a touchdown pass to Josh Oliver while working for the Vikings.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Max Brosmer (12) hands off to running back Cam Akers (31) in the fourth quarter of the NFL Week 3 game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Cincinnati Bengals at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2025. The Vikings won, 48-10.

The Vikings had some injury concerns at running back last year. Bumping up Akers from the practice squad therefore made a lot of sense. Once the three freebie practice squad elevations got used, Minnesota decided to move on, leading to Seattle signing him for what ended up being a pretty special run to the Super Bowl.

Somehow only 26, Cam Akers has been through a ton in his career. The 5’10” and 217-pound runner got drafted in the 2nd of the 2020 NFL Draft. Since then, Akers has worked through serious injury on multiple occasions. So, too, has he won a pair of Super Bowls.

Looking at Akers’ career means considering someone of tremendous toughness, determination, and work ethic. Sometimes, those words get thrown around in football circles so commonly that all of the meaning gets drained. Not so with Akers. He’s incredibly impressive.

So far, Cam Akers has played for the Rams, Vikings (X3), Texans, Saints, and Seahawks.
