This Could Be the Vikings’ Winning Formula

The Minnesota Vikings were not given full credit for the win last week vs. a struggling Washington Commanders team that came into Week 14 with a 3-9 record. So even though the team was dominant on offense and defense, there were doubts about the quality of the win.

Even Commanders’ starting QB Jayden Daniels, who was coming off an elbow injury, couldn’t muster points against the Vikings before reinjuring his elbow and being replaced by backup Marcus Mariota. The defense stymied the Commanders’ offense and came away with three turnovers, which this team has desperately missed in previous matchups.

Meanwhile, the offense proved they could be balanced in delivering 163 passing yards from quarterback J.J. McCarthy and three passing touchdowns. Success! Finally, what we, as fans, were hoping for from the offense was McCarthy showing accuracy and the Vikings’ play-calling not getting away from the run.

The Vikings ran the ball with success, extended drives, and it opened up the offense. So, is that the Vikings’ winning formula? Did they find their identity by having McCarthy play more freely?

The Vikings came away with a crushing 31-0 victory, but there were doubts yet by the media and fanbase about the caliber of the team they defeated. So in Week 15, the Vikings, although already eliminated in the playoffs, faced a Dallas Cowboys team on the road that was still in the hunt. The Cowboys had everything to lose and were coming off an impressive win against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Vikings needed to go into Dallas, and most importantly, McCarthy needed to show he could repeat a solid performance at quarterback.

Facing a Cowboys team that absolutely needed a victory to keep its playoff hopes alive, the Vikings delivered a complete, disciplined road performance, winning 34-26 in primetime on Sunday Night Football. It was the kind of game that the coaches, players, and fans needed to show growth, belief, that they are a team discovering its identity.

Everyone has seen that Dallas has the firepower on offense capable of breaking games open in a matter of minutes. After the initial turnover on the batted-ball interception and Dallas striking first with a Javonte Williams TD, the Cowboys looked on their way to turning the game into a lopsided effort. Instead, Minnesota’s defense once again set the tone. Brian Flores’ defense and the “bend-don’t-break” approach did that all game in making Dallas settle for six field goal attempts — Pro Bowl Kicker Brandon Aubrey missed two.

That defensive resilience has been there most of the season. Yes, I am frustrated like many fans that the Vikings have whiffed on way too many sack opportunities, or that they could not turn the ball over. The issue for much of the season has been the defense trying to cover up offensive inconsistencies in the form of stalled drives, turnovers, and stretches where the offense simply couldn’t stay on the field.

Because of that side of the ball, the Vikings remained in contention in several games they shouldn’t have been in due to the lack of offensive production, except against the Seahawks. Even with all of the turnovers lately from the Vikings’ Offense, the defense is ranked 13th in the league in points allowed (21.9). Against Dak Prescott, a decent running game, and weapons like CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens to throw to, allowing 26 points may seem like a lot, until you peel the onion and see the layers of factors that forced field goals.

Minnesota’s formula for winning and the future identity of this team were on display: Bend-but-don’t-break on defense, and let McCarthy play freely with a balanced attack between the run and pass.

For the second straight week, solid quarterback play from the sophomore made the difference. McCarthy played efficiently in the red zone and protected the ball. The Vikings also limited the time-of-possession difference to an extent (5:12 advantage for the Cowboys), which allowed the defense to stay fresh.

The result is two straight victories built on complementary football, which has injected positivity from that very same media and fanbase that had ridiculed McCarthy with memes. The defense remains consistent, but the offense is seemingly catching up. With McCarthy settling in, the Vikings have a new outlook on their plans, not only at quarterback but also for key contracts for the 2026 season.

The Vikings still have three more games to show that this formula for winning is sustainable, for real, and a reason for hope going forward into next year. Yes, they may have figured out the formula for winning too late for this season, but it could be the recipe the Vikings are cooking up for next season.
