Could Christian Ponder Have Succeeded With the 2025 Vikings?

Ask any Vikings fans of a certain age who was the worst draft bust in team history, and you’re likely to get a mouthful or two about Christian Ponder, the 12th overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.
The Ponder pick was frequently referenced by Vikings fans who were reticent to select J.J. McCarthy in the first round of 2024. On paper, there are similarities between the selections of McCarthy and Ponder: both QBs hailed from big-time college football programs (FSU and Michigan, respectively). Both were taken in the middle of the 1st round out of necessity for a new starting QB. Neither was close to the top QB off the board: Ponder was the 4th QB drafted in 2011, McCarthy was the 5th in 2024.

Of course, none of these superficial similarities are especially relevant for predicting the success of McCarthy. He might be much better than Ponder…he also might be even worse.
But there’s a compelling case to be made that, even if McCarthy played at the level of Ponder, it would not spell disaster for the Vikings. Said differently, if 2011 Ponder could magically time-travel to 2025 to be the Vikings’ new starting QB, he might actually find some degree of success.
Let’s go back to 2011: Ponder was drafted because the Vikings’ QBs from 2010 simply could not get the job done. Brett Favre finally looked his age, and quarterback/wide receiver/punt returner/kick returner Joe Webb was not a serious succession plan.
In his first season, Ponder picked up right where the 2010 QB room had left off, with very poor performance en route to a 2-8 record as a starting QB.

Without a doubt, Ponder was a big part of the problem. But the Vikings’ offense also suffered from a lack of receiving threats: aside from Percy Harvin, who had arguably the best season of his career, none of the Vikings’ receivers managed more than 500 yards. Today, even Harvin is regarded as a bit of a bust.
All this goes to show that the degree of difficulty for Ponder was very high: if Favre couldn’t succeed with the 2010 Vikings’ offensive roster, a rookie QB didn’t have much hope of turning things around in 2011.
The situation for McCarthy is exactly the opposite: the second-year QB is taking over an offense with some of the best receiving weapons in the league in Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson, as well as a top-tier offensive line. The QB before McCarthy—Sam Darnold—looked like a bust before he came to Minnesota in 2024.
With Kevin O’Connell at the helm, Darnold resuscitated his career, finishing the season 5th in yards and passing TDs. If the current Vikings’ offense can make San Darnold look like an MVP candidate, it’s hard to believe they couldn’t do something similar for someone like Christian Ponder.

Indeed, in his three seasons as a starting QB, Ponder’s passing stats were not significantly worse than Sam Darnold’s numbers in his first three seasons with the Jets. Ponder’s passer rating in that time was a paltry 77.3; Darnold’s was 78.6.
Ponder, unfortunately, never got a second chance as a starting QB with another team. But it’s not totally unreasonable to think that if he had gotten the opportunity to play for the 2024/25 Vikings, Ponder may have seen the same career resurgence that Darnold did.
The good news is, there’s a pretty decent chance McCarthy is simply better than Ponder. But even if he’s not, don’t expect the Vikings’ offense to look anywhere near as bad as the 2011 squad did.
