Vikings See Key Contract Details Crystallize

Tennessee Titans general manager Ran Carthon chats with Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah during practice in Eagan, Minn., Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023.

Usually, the contract business gets taken care of in March and April, the main months for talent acquisition in the NFL.

Fast forward into the end of August. The great descent around the NFL takes place as teams move from 90 (or 91) players down to just 53 players per team (alongside a 16/17-person practice squad). Inevitably, some player shuffling takes place — such as the Vikings moving out Mekhi Blackmon — an outcome that involved the Vikings seeing a familiar name return to the Twin Cities.

Vikings See Adam Thielen Contract Details Finished Off

The player under consideration, of course, is veteran receiver Adam Thielen. He left Carolina behind in favor of a homecoming with a team that has a chance of competing.

Ben Goessling of The Star Tribune is one of the best in the business. He dug up the precise details of the receiver’s adjusted deal: “Adam Thielen’s deal with the #Vikings only has a salary cap hit of $4.588 million; he gets a $3 million base salary, a $1 million renegotiation bonus and up to $1 million in per-game roster bonuses. Since Thielen only played 10 games last year, the per-game rosters are only worth $588,235 against the cap right now.”

Note, as well, that Carson Wentz’ contract also gets some clarity.

Again, Goessling is coming through with the clear information. Kick it over to the Vikings writer for the precise details: “Carson Wentz’s deal with the #Vikings is a veteran minimum contract of $1.255 million, with a $167,500 signing bonus. Salary cap hit of $1,422,500.”

Originally, the word was that Adam Thielen was going to arrive in the Twin Cities alongside his full $7+ million cap charge. Getting the veteran back to Minnesota involved moving on from a 4th and 5th while then seeing a 5th and conditional 7th return.

So, not a huge trade haul for Carolina but one that many viewed as an overpay (myself included). Seeing the cap charge shrink down makes things look quite a bit tidier. Plus, the details of the conditional 7th do help to guard the Vikings against injury risk.

Mike Kaye clarified the terms, explaining, “Per league source, conditions for the 7th round pick heading to #Vikings from #Panthers: Becomes a 2026 sixth-round pick if Adam Thielen is not active for 10 games or not on 53-man roster for 14 games. He played 10 games last year, fwiw, while dealing with a hamstring injury.”

Essentially the only thing that will keep Adam Thielen from being around for those game thresholds — especially given his role on specials, too — is injury. At 35, Thielen has a worse chance of staying healthy than when he was 25 (at least as far as I can tell; I’m far from a medical expert). If something pretty bad happens to Thielen with health, knocking the receiver out for more than seven games, then the Vikings see their 7th turn into a 6th.

Add it all together and see where things stands.

For roughly $4.6 million in cap space, Mr. Thielen is back to be the WR2 without Jordan Addison and the WR3 with Jordan Addison. He’ll play a depth role on specials and will act as a savvy veteran behind the scenes. Some draft picks were sacrificed to make the deal happen, but there’s some protection built-in to guard against a scenario where Thielen misses lots of time due to injury.

Now, here’s the final detail to remember: Adam Thielen doesn’t need to offer the Vikings the best stats. Rather, he needs to offer the Vikings the right stats.

Circle back around to Week 1 for an example. Looking at the statistics would leave most wanting more from Thielen since he finished his day with 0 catches for 0 yards. He had a drop, too. But then there was the 2-point conversion that was vital to the winning the game by a field goal.

The standard is obviously higher than what occurred in Week 1 but a central truth shines through: coming through with a catch in a critical moment is what it’s all about. Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, and Aaron Jones can soak up the targets. Adam Thielen can be one of the players who delivers in critical moments.

With the Viking seeing the details for Thielen and Wentz crystallize, the overall budget gets more precise. The team is marching through the beginning stages of the 2025 season with north of $17.3 million in open cap room. We’ll see if some of that open cap space starts to burn a hole in the GM’s pocket.
